For comparison, here are two writing samples ( in a Clairefountain spiral notebook) that use other kinds of blue ink. The first sentence is Iroshizuku Asa-gao in a Noodler's piston fill pen with an EF Knox 26 nib. The second is Noodler's Blue Eel in a Pilot G78 with a medium nib.On my monitor, the Asa-gao and the Hyancinth look the same, but the former is actually much darker than the latter in real life.

Overall, I think De Atramentis Hyacinth is an ink that I can see putting into regular rotation. It is not waterproof and I don't know if it's bulletproof (I suspect not), and that could be an issue for some people. It might be too bright for business use, but it would be good for letter writing and casual daily use.

That's pretty. I have a broken computer so I am temporarily using an uncalibrated monitor, but it looks almost like a periwinkle blue to me. That might be my monitor, however. How does it look on the page?

I described Hyacinth's color as like that of blue jeans, but periwinkle is a good descriptor as well.

Nice review! Nice ink!! I use it quite often and my screen tells me that your picture isn't bad at all. A light to middling blue with a touch of purple (as if there weren't already dozens of those out there). The scent is nice too but mine resembles a rose more than a hyacinth.

Interesting - I ordered a sample and it was quite a bit darker than what I see on the monitor. I'd describe it as slightly lighter in hue than their Sapphire. I thought it was very nice except for the scent, which I found overpowering. So if you are sensitive to fragrances, this may be too much for you. If I could get it without the scent, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. The Sapphire is slightly darker and their Royal Blue is somewhat lighter.

Thanks for the review!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
