Tested on GP Copy paper, 20 lb 88 bright.

Dry in about 8 seconds.

Flow seems slightly on the dry side of mid-range, though without a benchmark nib it's hard to say for sure.

Performs perfectly with the Edison Fine nib, no start up problems after 5 min cap off.

No feathering from the nib even on this cheap paper. The wetter parts of the dip pen writing did feather some, but to be expected.

Bleedthrough only spotty in the heaviest inked areas. Show through isn't relevant for this paper as even ballpoint ink shows through.

Shading? I'm perhaps one of the least appreciative of shading, but I can see some here from both the nib and the dip pen. See the photo for how much.

Waterproof? Well it doesn't just wash off the page. There seems to be a black component that wants to hang around.

Color is fairly close to Noodler's Red Black, flow and feathering seem similar as well.

Nice match for my new Cherry Cordial Nouveau Premiere LE:

Wow, with that name it has a lot to live up to. I like it, but I'm drawn more to,the Ancient Copper, but maybe that is because I'm using it now. I'm so glad the De Atramentis inks are here in USA. All of these, and the new Diamine inks, are more than worthy competition for Noodler's, which I am using less and less. In fact, I'm trying to arrive at just a few essential inks out of the >100 I own. Maybe only one Noodler's in there wheras Diamine is in for sure. Jury is still out on De Atramentis. Thanks for the review.

What's it got to live up to? Diamine Amaranth? (I know nothing of that color tho I may have a sample). Ancient Copper is so far my favorite yellow/orange ink. Just beautiful. I like even more with a few drops sheaffer red added.

Ink performance (annoyingly) varies a lot within brands, overlapping the differences between brands. And, in the USA at least, De A is $15/50ml vs Noodler's at $12/90ml. and

I don't see anything here justifying a price premium over Noodlers Red/Black. ATM I have 50 or more Noodler's, one diamine 70, 24 30ml, and 10 or so samples. De A I think this was bottle 5? Black blue, black green, aubergine, ruby red, dark blue. OTOH as I'm unlikely to ever use even half of a bottle of any color given how little I wrote and my pref for fine nibs, it's not much practical difference.

This is a nice ink, and I'll be enjoying it. I hope I've avoided the feathering colors. I see a lot of DeA inks have that problem from all the reviews I've read, but not this or the dk blue. ruby, not sure, haven't tried the other two. My paper isn't usually this cheap but it just bugs me knowing I can't write on a wide choice of papers with any pen I take out of the house. For work, I pretty much need black, and no pens have that right now, but I wanna be able to take notes freely. Noodlers is all over the map. Tanager feathers like detergent, ottoman very tame , basic black even more tame. IDK how variable diamine is... or herbin. herbin may be the most consistent properties across a brand, maybe iroshi as well.

The pen FWIW is much thinner than I expected. Love the material tho and I tend to like thinner pens anyway. Looks like I got a good nib. Bit of alignment req'd, but just a tiny bit.

Amarant is a flower long referred to in poetry and literature for its beauty and longevity.

I've never seen Diamine Amaranth, which also evidently has big aspirations.

I'll have to try Ancient Copper with some Sheaffer's red mixed in!

I wikipedia'd it - "never fading" (the flower), that would be unlikely for this ink to live up to but who knows. Time for a dashboard test, that fades just about everything.

Amarath is a long and slender cat tail-like flower/seed head which drapes down and is a purple/red color. It can be grown for ornament and for its seed. The color of the ink looks sort of orange for what I think of as amaranth but it's still attractive. However, I think it would have to offer some superpower over Diamine Ancient Copper (for instance) or Noodler's Antietam. It does not look as saturated but it would be a good addition to a collection which lacked something unusual in the red family.

Wew! Antietam is a good deal redder! Shows you how bad my color memory is.

  • 2 weeks later...

Looks like a nice brown color  thanks for sharing

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Here's the result of 3 months fading in the Summer sun:

Amarant Ink Fading Test

The very left edge was protected a bit by the rim of the windshield, hence the darker color there.

There's some other ink swatches at the bottom. The blank spots are Visconti blue (bit there, didn't scan), BSB both new and old formulas reduced to some yellow-grey flecks, and lower right is PR Tanzanite. Kon Peki - good going! Noodler's Eeel blue and of course KTC held up fine. As did Red Black.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
