The Caliph, also called the 786 is made in extremely small numbers by the Deccan pen stores in Hyderabad, India. I had bought this pen a while back and finally decided to take it out today and document it here.

 

It is an elegant pen, the size of a Parker 51 with an excellent snap on cap and an elegantly designed section, all BHR and a golden overlay over BHR cap. Such elegance and attention to ergonomics is typical of Deccan. Note the small groove at the end of the barrel and the nice brushed finish that they have given to this pen.

What a sweet little pen! I like the looks of that section and the clip is nicely shaped too. How does the cap lock on, there's not ring for a snap cap? Normally I don't like a brushed finish but it works well here.

The flare in the section, near the nib, engages with a clutch inside the cap and holds it securely. The shaped Hr section does the same job that the conventional metal ring would have.

 

You might like to see the Deccan "Sailor" pen as well, which is another beauty having the same cap gripping arrangement.

All the details work - the groove, the overlay, the texture, the relatively thick clip to slender body, and particularly, I think, the proportion of black left bare at the top of the cap. It's smooth, no awkward steps in the profile... how come I have not got one?

 

Wondering whether Deccan with this have almost done an Indian version of the Lamy 2000!

Thank you, the thing with Deccan is that for some reason they make their pens in really small numbers. So it is a matter of buying a pen you see at their counter and buying it immediately if you like it. Most of the pens have never been made again. One of the Deccan brothers is a master pen turner who has excellent imagination and skills. They started the trend of brushing their black ebonite pens when the raw material surface quality was not upto the mark, the brushing hides the blemishes left by small blow holes/inclusions.

 

BTW have you seen the Deccan masterpiece? I think they have very successfully mated a 149 type O/S nib, ED filler simplicity and Brushed Lamy2000 finish into one single pen.

Wow love the look & girth of that Deccan Masterpiece. Thank you for posting this. How does it write?

 

I'd love to buy an Indian pen, don't mind an eyedropper, but am leery of getting something via mailorder if I have a problem with its writing characteristics.

 

Hari yours is an opinion I respect - could you recommend 2 or 3 Indian pens I should consider?

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
