Baystate Blue - Uv Max Exposure

This is my first review post, English is not my native tongue, so be kind please

A sample of Baystate Blue was exposed to extreme UV levels in summer season in my country (Perú).

Below is a table with the UV index, so you can get the idea.

From the UV scale 1 ~ 12 the sample exposed to 11 ~ 13 level for three consecutive days, my initial plan was to leave the sample for a whole week,

but after the third day I thought it was enough, America UV index has only 11 levels, in the southern hemisphere the highest level is 14 !!!

(Earth conditions are degrading in alarming way).

My City UV Index:

I know this is not a scientific was to make experiments, but this experiment is with common house ware items.

The sample was exposed to plain sunlight inside a room with a 68 % ~ 78 % humidity and 24 ~ 27 °C, the paper is a 90 gram Brazilian bond paper.

Two samples were placed in the paper, a sample (exposed to the sun) and another (covered the whole process of the experiment inside of a leaflet).

The write sample was made with a Platinum Preppy 0.5 nib size and Baystate Blue ink.

The result was interesting, some fade in the hue of the sample is evident, as well as the paper presents some "burning" or photo-sensible effect. The left

sample looks like a R&K Salix colour ink.

Final comments, trust me, the UV exposure in the southern hemisphere is very, very strong, every year the UV index increases in alarming rate.

The next "volunteer" for this UV test will be Noodler's X Feather.

Stay tuned

Thanks for the report. At least the bleached side still looks blue, just not bright blue.

Wow that is a big change for 3 days! At least it did not disappear and is still legible.

Change is not mandatory, Survival is not required.

UV brings out the shading in BSB! lol

I like the new color. It reminds me of a more traditional iron gall ink. But yeah, that's a lot of degradation.

Be careful down there in the sun!

Yep, that's Baystate Blue. After a week or two it would have faded to a light grey or barely legible shadow on the paper.

thank you - I have right now something similar on my windowsill. Let's see when BSB is going to fade... Luckily I'm in Europe, so it won't be as dramatic.

Greetings,

Michael

  • 1 month later...

I'm so sad that BSB fades. I've already discovered it to be true, but I'm not giving it up because the color is amazing.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

After 3 months in winter on the windowsill BSB has gone almost completely. But the "protected" BSB inside my books only became a bit darker, but is still very bright.

I still love BSB - especially with 1.1 italic for short notices for my coworkers: they just can't ignore it :-)

Greetings,

Michael

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
