List Of Possible Nib Substitutions

VillersCotterets

Recommended Posts

It might be useful to maintain a list of nibs and nib assemblies that can be used in popular pens.

For instance,

  • 5mm Schmidt nibs

  • Knox K26
    • Noodler's Ink Flex pen, piston standard nib pen, and ebonite pens

  • Knox K35
    • Bulow x450, x750, x530
    • Jinhao x450, x750, 159
    • Noodler's Ink Ahab

  • Lamy LZ-50
    • Lamy Accent, AL-Star, CP1, Joy, Logo, Safari, Studio, and Vista

  • Manuscript Calligraphic Set (Credit to P.A.R.)
    • Noodler's Ink Flex pen, piston standard nib pen, and ebonite pens

etc...

And maybe also a list of nibmeisters selling ready-made nibs...

NOTE : TWSBI Diamond 540

Let me clarify this,

the 540 colored are with Bock nib + twsbi feeder

the 540 clear demonstrator will be mixing, M,B still Schemidt, EF,F will be all Bock + twsbi feeder

all stub 1.1 & 1.5 are Bock + twsbi feeder

I'll see what nibs I have laying around and edit this post in the future. This thread has so much possibility, love it already, VillersCotterets!

Does anyone know if the nib on a Pelikan 381 fits on the TWSBI 530? Thanks!

Do the Pelikan nobs just screw in or need to be modified?

You have to remove the nib from the nib unit (feeder/threaded section) and replace it into the TWSBI nib unit of which you also removed the nib. Then resetting the feeder is recommended for ink flow and consistency. Refer to the linked threads for more information on the TWSBI modifications.

One correction: the Knox K26 nibs fit the Noodler's piston flex pen, piston standard nib pen, and ebonite pens. The K35 only fits the Ahab.

One addition: The nibs from the Manuscript Calligraphy sets fit the abovementioned pens (other than the Ahab) as mentioned in my topic from a while back: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/208720-inexpensive-italic-nibs-for-the-noodlers-piston-pen/

Great thread. I've been swapping nibs around on Parkers and JinHaos but not keeping good notes. I'll try to keep better records now.

Don't you wish we could use our pens to write on the Fountain Pen Network Fora?

This is a fantastic idea. I've got both a Bexley Simplicity (a schmidt nib if I recall) and a Pelikan M150 that I'd give anything (save the cost of custom nib work) to swap their nibs for something truly XF. Any suggestions for those pens?

I have successfully used a Montblanc 144 spare nib on a Cross Solo. Worked perfectly.

I have put Esterbrook nib modules in Pelikan M200 and M400.

I have successfully used Pelikan M200 and M4XX 14K and 18K nib modules in Esterbrook J series and M2, they screw in but protrude some, still usable.

These might seem ridiculous, but if you had a broken pen and a spare nib, you might consider them.

Thanks the info. I have some cheap Chinese pens and some inexpensive Indian pens. Nib sellers on the net show 5MM, 6MM, etc. nibs. What does this measurement tell me? Is this something to do with fitting the housing? Would a 35MM nib replace a 26MM nib? Should I measure the old nib and try to find one that fits that measurement? Are most manufactured loose nibs universal in 2 or three dimensions?

Some, but not all, nibs are generic copies of popular nib systems (nib + feed).

5 mm (or 6mm) is usually the diameter of the feed.

26 mm (or 35 mm ) is usually the width of the shoulders.

Some companies describe those nibs as #5 nibs (or #6 nibs)

A #5 nib (5 mm) surely won't fit a #6 feed (which requires a 6 mm nib). But a #5 might fit a 5 mm feed... depending on the shape of the feed and length of the nib. Even if you have same dimensions, the shape of the nib might not fit the feed for many reasons. It always comes down to a trial and error process. This is why we need a list of possible compatible nibs...

Ok. So if a Prera nib fits a Plumix is the opposite true? Will a Plumix nib fit a Prera.

As seen in this post

I fitted an old duofold nib onto my noodler's flex pen. Couldn't give you the EXACT model of the duofold (a 1940s model I'm sure), but I imagine many vintage Duofold nibs will fit.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
