Sorry for the blurriness, but my cell phone did a better job of picking up these colors than my camera did, so there you have it!

Top to bottom we have:

J. Herbin Vert Pre

Rohrer and Klingner Alt-Goldgrun

Iroshizuku Chiku-rin

Diamine Light Green

Diamine Kelly Green

Diamine Meadow

My sincere and humble thanks to the FPN pals who generously donated the samples which made this comparison possible!!!

Cool! I've come to appreciate light yellowish greens for editing - and doodling leaves in margins...

Do you find the Chiku-rin and the light green so similar in real life (I have only the Diamine)?

I also have a sample of Diamine Jade Green, which is a similar colour to Vert pré, and the Sailor limited edition Waka-uguisu, which is a somewhere between Light Green and Alt-Goldgrün: in the middle for lightness/darkness and having more complex shading than Light Green without being as exuberant as Alt-Goldgrün.

I'm also wondering whether Meadow would be an efficient colour to add to Noodler's Blue-Black to make more of a dark teal.

Chiku-rin and Light green DO look very similar, with the Light Green being just a touch more yellow. I haven't used the Light Green in a pen yet, so I cannot compare behavior characteristics.

It's good to see these compared. I've never used greens (or any colours, really) that are very light as I find that as my eyes have aged (strangely, along with the rest of me) I need increased contrast between ink and paper. So, darker inks predominate my meagre range here.

Diamine Umber is the lightest I have but I must say that the colours you've shown here are pretty striking. Annotation or corrections would be the sort of use I could envisage.

Great comparison, Shaylen.

For The Good Captain: I've used the Meadow, the Alt-Goldgrun, the Chiku-rin and (briefly) the Diamine Light Green, and I find them all very legible. The Meadow and the Alt-Goldgrun are darker, but even the two lighter greens are perfectly fine. And I have those 45-year-old eyes, which is even stranger in my case, since every birthday I remain 29. But the Chiku-rin and the Light Green have a brightness that makes them legible. They are also very cheery.

Green is my favourite colour and I'm partial to light green inks with yellow undertones.

Thanks for such a great comparison; I have Kelly Green and it is one of my favourite inks. This comparison has confirmed I need to purchase R&K Alt-Goldgrun!

Thank you for your suggestions. Our local pen and ink emporium has a Diamine swatch chart made up of actual pieces of paper coloured with the ink in question so I'll have a look at the greens when next in town.

Glad I could be of service everyone!

I only own PR's Foam Green. My guess puts it between the Iroshizuku Chiku-rin and the Diamine light. Thoughts?

Thank you for the cross-brand chart! Saves someone like me $$.

I've had Foam Green in the past, and it is much less yellow than Chiku-rin and Diamine Light Green. On top of that, I found Foam Green far too light to be legible/practical, whereas these two seem to be saturated enough to read.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
