I just received in today's mail, fresh from John Mottishaw's workbench, my Nakaya Portable Writer with a new BB nib nib ground to a WONDERFUL stub nib! I had bought the pen from John almost two years ago but seldom used it because the B nib was just ... well, boring. So much so I had seriously considered selling the pen because it just sat in storage and I could never really get excited about using it. The pen itself is magnificent, and the nib was smooth, and wrote a beautiful line, but I prefer nibs that give line variation, whether through shape, flex, or sometimes both. I had also considered sending the pen to Greg Minuskin for grinding the B nib to a stub, but decided the Japanese B nib was just too narrow for me and wouldn't provide a stub wide enough for my liking.
So I inquired of John and learned that that CFP would exchange the nib for a nominal fee (it was inspected by them and found to be in pristine condition, having been well cared for and barely used). The original B nib was thus replaced with a BB nib which John ground to a stub per my instructions. It could not be better if I had been standing next to him at a pen show or in his workshop! Perfect width (about 1.1 mm), smoothness and flow.
Thank you John Mottishaw / Classic Fountain Pens / Nibs.com!
