An Oblique Holder

Recommended Posts

I made this oblique holder using the flange from a plastic holder that I didn't like. The body of the holder was an experiment that I had abandoned. Being irritated one time too many by the inconvenient (for me) ridge on the plastic holder I decided to implant the flange from it into this half finished body.

It has turned out well although I was off on the finger placement a little bit. I grip the holder about 1 cm above where I thought I was going to hold it. Luckily it still fits properly and I like the thicker grip section.

Carving out the wood has resulted in a really light holder. I believe it helped with the feel and feedback.

I am pleased with the performance of the holder more than the aesthetics.

C&C welcome.

Fascinating! Ever played with an oblique holder inserted into a reed for width and light weight? Would the stress split the reed? :hmm1:

Thanks Ken. The oblique mounting is for Copperplate Calligraphy. I did my first one for a Brause 66EF nib that didn't fit any of the holders I had at the time.

Interesting idea GP. I'm pretty sure the slit for the flange will split over time, however, it can be strengthened at the top of the slit by a few turns of copper wire for an interesting effect. The weight would be nice and I'm sure some interesting shapes could be carved out of the staff. Hmmm...

How did I miss this???

Another beautiful holder, Salman!! You really have quite a gift for these. I really love the way your holders look. They seem to have motion to them ... life ... not just dead straight plastic (or in some cases, wood) sticks. Beautiful!!! How long is this holder??? I don't have a clue about metrics, though.

Very interesting. Didn't know if I liked it at first but it's growing on me. Can definately appreciate the work.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
