Edison Collier Antique Marble

Federalist Pens

Recommended Posts

I have been admiring Brian Grey's Edison pens for a few years now. I have seen his pens in person at pen shows the past few years.

I was always impressed with the quality and variety Brain offers in his models.

Back at the DC Pen Show last August, I saw the new Collier model. The production model in the Antique Marble material just jumps right out at you!

I finally took the plunge about two months ago. At the beginning of October, I ordered the Collier through Goulet Pens ( www.gouletpens.com ). I had it shipped first class mail, and it arrived in less than a week. Brian (Grey) did send me an email thanking me for the purchase, and provided USPS delivery information. Brian (Goulet) sent me an email thanking me for the purchase (From his site) as well.

This is my first Edison Pen! This pen is tremendous! The color is amazing! It is difficult to describe, because it seems that it changes according to the light you are in. It is a brownish, marble-like golden pattern that has a lot of translucence to it. I am a big fan of demo type pens, so this was a "gotta have" type pen when I saw it! The price was the standard cost for an Edison production pen with a steel nib ($150). A good value for this level of quality!

Here are some photo links for samples/size comparison:

The pen is all acrylic, and has a converter/cartridge type filling system. This pen can also be used as an eye-dropper because there is no metal in the feed/barrel. I chose the stainless medium nib for my pen. This is a two-tone, plated nib that has the "Edison" Logo stamped on the face of the nib. It is a very smooth writer, and puts down a very solid, medium line. I am sure that Brian Grey checks these nibs before they are sent out. Brain has "Tuned" nibs for me in the past, and he is one of the better nib tweakers!

Customer service at Edison is also taken very seriously. I did have a minor cosmetic issue with the pen when I received it. Brian Grey told me to send it directly back to him, and he did correct the issue with no issues or problems. He also offered to refund me in full if I was still not satisfied with the pen. This attention to detail and satisfaction should impress anyone, and assure them to buy with confidence at Edison! :)

Excellent write up, thank you! I have this same model and color and I love it. The Antique Gold Marble material is really beautiful and appealing to both men and women. Being a production model makes the pen even that much more alluring to the wallet or pocketbook, as well.

It is no wonder the Collier was selected as GoldsSpot Pens' pen of the year. Brian is really coming into his own with Edison Pens!

Aslan is being modest. He, along with Brian, created the Collier. I had the opportunity to own the second one made. Didn't balance right for me but it is still one of the nicest designs i've seen.

Very nice review. Thanks for the photos with other pens, too. The translucency of the material is way cool. happyberet.gif

congrats on a nice pen and a nice review

Very nice and very tempting!

I've asked Santa for an Edison Hudson in emerald for Christmas...hope that I get to admire one of Brian's pens first-hand soon.

What a beautiful pen. It's the first time that I have really desired an Edison.

Alas, the added cost of getting it in my hands in the UK makes it too expensive, probably about 30% over list at the cheapest post rate.

It's a shame a UK dealer can't stock them. :eureka:

Though it's an american pen, it has a beautiful italian style, non è vero?

interesting! can u point me to an Italian pen with that style? i perceive Italian pens as too ornamental or out of the ordinary shape design bodies (eg. Visconti Divina, Opera Club) -not saying that i don't like some of them. i just never saw this Edison as an Italian style pen. :hmm1:

Beautiful pen! I am looking for my second fountain pen and have read great things about the Colliers. Definitely a contender.

I think it has the look of a stipula, that's the closest to an Italian.

Beautiful pen design and color....

One question.....

Is Collier pen really short when the cap is off? Somehow think I saw a pic some with cap off and it looked like it might be very short pen....is this the case?

Would be great to see some pics of pen without cap....and next to some other pens...

I wouldn't call it too short...it's about 5" uncapped. Pictured next to a Pelikan M215 & Sheaffer 440 it's the biggest of the bunch.

Thanks for info and pic, owenj...very helpful!

You're right that's not short...must have just been the perspective in a photo I saw somewhere...

Glad it was helpful :clap1: I'm always a little hesitant to comment on the too long/short thing because I have really small hands. The Collier (mine is "custom" but I'm assuming the production line is the same) is not only not too short, it's also kinda big. I think it's 1/2" or slightly even wider so it fits nicely in your hand w/o feeling flimsy or like a tree.

I purchased this pen.  The pen does write, but the body is blemished.  It almost looks as if the body sat in the sun, or in some damaging liquid, but the coating on the length of the pen on one "side" does not match the rest of the body.  There is no marble in this area.  Note that the cap has this same blemish, but does not line up with the body.

Another issue is that the end on the body and the end on the cap are not flush.  There is a lip on each.

As for the writing, this pen skips a lot.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
