Pelikan 101N Tortoise (The Reissue)

This is it, the pen I feared I would not get, the Pelkain 101N tortoise reissue. When word got out I placed an order for one immediately, and then I waited. While on holiday in Barcelona I saw one in a store. Even my wife liked it! But, I had one on order back home, and the price in Euros...ouch. Back stateside I learned I missed out on the first batch. #$#$#@$@$@%! Maybe there would be another production run. After a long delay (celluloid problems or something in Asia) there was, and I got one. Mine has a broad nib.

First, is the color. Many were upset it was so green. I like it. The tortoise (use that term lightly here) is very lightweight and has excellent transparency. I also like the chocolate drops on the ends. The retro pressed Pelikan logo is a great addition. The curvy clip is a welcome departure from the now standard Pelikan beak clip.

The large ink window is a nice touch that seems to mimic the vaunted original. The plainly adorned vintage nib is also quite attractive. It writes a beautiful, juicy broad line, but it does have one odd feature. Drawing a fast cross stroke causes the nib to sing a shrill note. Weird I know, but Dr. Stephen Pustilnik (the nib meister at Dromgoole's in Houston, TX) has the same pen, fine nib, with the same singing voice. Does not impact performance, but I'm not used to my nibs talking back to me. Although I do not have huge hands I find the pen smallish, and really prefer to post it, which takes some getting used to because I normally abstain.

Recently, I heard that there was a third production run. While this diminished the dramatic impact of my quest to get one, I hope everybody who wants one can get one. It is a special pen that I can't see ever getting rid of.

I was very impressed by this pen. I adore green--my favorite color--so I was not disappointed. The nib is fantastic! It has a nice softness that I wish my other modern Pelikan nibs had. While I would love to have a vintage 101N, this is a much cheaper alternative and its modernity makes it a reliable user.

beautiful pen with quite a legacy behind it, is the bright green ink window a little too loud? anyway, it is a pen which will attract the eyes of the fp connoisseur and layman alike.

enjoy it.

Appreciate the review. This is a modern pen with a vintage design?

Newly manufactured homage to one of the original Pelikan designs. Nice pen and a nice review.

There is no doubt that this is a lovely pen and I hope that you get much enjoyment from it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
