Noodler's Purple Heart

I recently purchased a bottle of Noodler's Purple Heart, a new ink exclusive to Goulet Pens. Here is a sample on Rhodia No 19 DotPad (I seem to have to always have an error in every review, see if you can spot this one).

The ink is a wonderful ink, a sophisticated purple tending to the reddish side of the purple spectrum. The ink tends to be toward the drier side of Noodler's inks, so it works well in vintage pens like the Waterman's 52-1/2V in the image. The ink dries relatively slowly on Rhodia paper, about 15-20 seconds; about half that time on HP 32lb Premium Choice Laser paper. The ink is partially waterproof, losing some of the blue from the purple, but the reddish characters are still distinct and readable. The ink shades nicely, even from a pen with a very fine nib. There was no feathering at all on Rhodia, HP 32lb Premium Choice Laser, or Clairefontaine Quo Vadis Habana (last year's version with white paper). I didn't see any feathering on cheap copier paper either, even with a wet nib like the flex pen. There was no bleed through on any of the quality papers, though there was a minimal amount on the cheap copier paper with the wetter nibs.

Noodler's Purple Heart is most similar to two other Noodler's inks, Black Swan in Australian Roses (BSiAR) and FPN Dumas Tulipe Noire (DTN). I've included swabs of these and several other purple inks. In comparison to Purple Heart, BSiAR is redder and slightly more saturated; DTN is very slightly redder and similarly saturated. The remaining colors are more distant. My reference purple is Montblanc Violet (now called Lavender Purple) and Purple Heart is distinctly redder.

Purple Heart is a very fine ink and I'm happy to have it.

The scan is a pretty good representation of the colors, though slightly more vibrant than in real life.

No relation to Goulet Pens, other than as a happy customer.

Nice color, thanks for sharing. Even better penmanship though. Your swabs represent some of my favorite inks, CdA storm, Herbin moon dust, and MB violet. Is lavendar purple really they same as violet? I never tried the violet, but it seems MB tweaked all their colors some recently.

Excellent review and penmanship. Thank you for adding the comparisons, they put us in the picture as to where the color fits in with the other well know purples.

You telegraphed the error . . . 'No. 18 Dot Pad'.

Thanks for the comparisons - Purple Heart is indeed very similar to Tulipe Noire. I'm going to have to give this one a try.

Excellent review. And penmanship! Thank you.

Thanks for the great review. I just ordered a bottle of Purple Heart this week and can hardly wait for it to arrive. The comparisons you included are very helpful.

Now if I could just learn to write like you  .

Truly beautiful penmanship.

Apparently, Lavender Purple is just renamed Violet. Here's one comparison.

I bought a bottle of this ink and really love it. It looks great in a wet fine nib that makes it a bit darker. I'm using it in my Parker Vacumatic right now and it's a perfect fit.

I do like Noodler's Purple Heart and have a bottle. Just need to find the right pen to go with it. I'm going through my pens and will find just the right one to show it off.

+1 on the penmanship. It's nice to see the product of an extraordinary writing tool in the hands of an individual that has devoted the time to master it's use.

Hello Joey,

Thank you for the great comparisons- as an avid fan of JH PdeL, I'm glad to finally see how it compares to PH.

Thanks again,

Sean :)

Nice review and comparisions, very similar to Tulipe Noire! If that ink would make my handwriting look that nice I would buy 3 bottles!

One of my favorite inks, rich and complex, like a fine red wine. It's actually very close to Diamine's new Merlot. This scan is the most accurate posted to date. I was considering doing a review and trying to get an accurate picture out there, but don't think I could improve upon this one. I use it in a cursive italic broad, love the shading and the somewhat subtle hue.

Yep, this is a great ink. Beautiful color that I think Nathan and the Goulets nailed. As an Eel series ink, it also offers a pleasant writing experience with its lubricating properties.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
