Noodler's Widowmaker

Introduction

My goal in this round of tests was to choose a dark red or burgundy ink to use in my new Visconti Cosmoplitan. The pen is made of stacked red and clear celluloid, and I plan to use it with a reddish ink so that any staining will blend into the overall colour of the pen. After having reviewed the results for all the inks tested, I've revised my conclusions for some of them; therefore, where my typed and handwritten comments conflict the typed comments supercede the handwritten ones.

Conclusions

Of the inks in this batch Noodler's Widowmaker is the only true dark red, without brown or purple undertones. It lacked impact when used in my Veruna Rajan with custom ground XXF nib; however, when used in the Visconti with 1.3 mm stub this colour really grabs one's attention! Flow characteristics were excellent with both the stub and XXF nibs, and I noticed moderate lubrication which I especially appreciated when using the XXF nib. Widowmaker is one of my two favourite inks in this round of testing.

Unlike Diamine Red Dragon, Widowmaker exhibited consistent colour and shading across a wide variety of lighting conditions. Thus depending on ambient light, sometimes I prefere Widowmaker and other times I prefere Red Dragon. I am finding it hard to choose between these two inks, so I'll have to buy them both! :)

i can't help but comment on your handwriting with italic (stub) nib :bunny01: very nice :P it's fat with the size of writing yet every character can be made out

I'm more pleased with red dragons appearance, this color just doesn't seem to stick with me

nice review =)

Thanks! I'm not used getting complements on my handwritting, so that was a pleasant surprise! I'm usually told my writing tends is an illegible scrawl....

A stub/italic forces me to slow down which makes my writing neater and more deliberate, also I think the line variation makes my writing more legible. I was also surprised at how easily I adapted to writing larger to accomodate the (huge) 1.3 mm stub.

Nice review, thanks. My experience with Widowmaker is similar to yours. The only faults I can find are that it lacks lubrication in dry writing pens and is relatively slow to dry. Otherwise a very nice ink.

I like Red Dragon a little better, but am glad to have a bottle of each.

A splendid shade of red indeed. It reminds me of the Montblanc Ruby Red. I find it quite similar but perhaps with some darker undertones.

The comparison of Tiananmen, Widow Maker and Oxblood helped me save some $$ since those three look the same to me. I already have Oxblood and Tiananmen--- I should have bought only one either.

Thanks for this review!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
