I know this ink has been reviewed countless times already, but I thought I would review it as well. So there. :P Since it's already been reviews so many times though I thought I wouldn't do as extensive a review as my recent review of Da Artramentis Sahara Grey (shameless selfpromotion). Not even a waterproof-ness test!

Great review! Great ink! This is one of my 3-4-5 favourite blues. IMO one of the best advantages: lowest maintenance. One of the biggest disadvantages: somewhat low in saturation/intensity.

But, as said above, you can't always have everything. (well, maybe).

One of my top three inks. Vibrant and safe.

Time will say nothing but I told you so.

Nice review of a great ink. It always seems lively and cheerful to me, and I like it even though I tend to choose more muted (depressive?) dark blues. Recently, I noticed some moldy looking scum at the top of a relatively new bottle of E de S. I ignored it and filled up anyway, but wonder what that's about.

SITB is old news and the company replaces all problem bottles if you contact them. Was a tiny batch that had this problem and I love their customer service

Nice review: my favorite blue

I've been told all French children (in the older days...) have learned writing with this ink

Thank you for sharing

I believe it is Violet Pensee that was used in french schools. It is discussed on this forum a few time i think. Let me look...:

Hello Rook Seven,

Thanks for this great review. I too am fond of J. Herbin's Eclat de Saphir- it is one of my favorite blues- it is indeed my favorite "vivid" blue. It reminds me of BSB without any of the headaches.

All the best,

Sean :)

To those who own both: how does it compare to Diamine's Sapphire? Some say they are (for all intents and purposes) identical - is this actually true? I have Sapphire, & think of it as a somewhat subdued BSB without the issues - it almost approaches the pop of BSB (although not entirely). Could you say the same about E de S?

Great review. I have this ink and like it alot. Just wish it was waterproof, but oh well, can't have everything.

Me too! It cleans up great, unlike Noodler's BSB. But it is so non-waterproof that I can't use it at work, only on journals at home.

Diamine Sapphire is a deeper blue. It's flow, etc. is very similar to the Herbin. I find that the Herbin fades shortly after writing, presumably as it dries. I prefer the Diamine and it is quite a bit cheaper, at least in the UK.John

I love the color, but can't use it here. It disappears in the sun (and yes, I leave things in the light).

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
