Please take a moment to adjust your gear to accurately depict this Gray Scale.

As the patches are neutral gray, that is what should be seen.

Observations:

  • These are the things which are not apparent from the Images.
  • These observations may differ ever so slightly from the Ink Review/s which may be in place.
  • My contribution was to generate enough reasonable samples, then capture the appearance of those samples.
  • If you'd like more detailed information, please send me a PM; I'll do what I can.
  • I leave it to each viewer to interpret what is seen, and/or to initiate discussion in the usual way.

Type:

  • LBlBk in 50ml bottles is a combination of dye and iron-gall in an FP ink.
  • LBlBk in cartridges is a dye-based (colour component) FP ink.

Flow Rate:

  • LBlBk in bottles is quite dry, but not dusty.
  • LBlBk in cartridges is comfortably dry.

Nib Dry-out:

  • LBlBk in bottles tend to become dry on the nib tip.

Start-up:

  • Both inks are OK.

Lubrication:

  • Both inks are OK.
  • LBlBk in cartridges is greater.

Nib Creeping:

  • None for both inks.

Staining:

  • None after 3 days for both inks.

Clogging:

  • Not seen for both inks.

Bleed Through:

  • None on papers used for both inks.

Show Through:

  • None on papers used for both inks.
  • Both sides of the sheet may be used.

Clean-up:

  • Both cleaned-up thoroughly with plain water.
  • LBlBk in bottles, having an iron-gall formulation, requires that one bring their 'A' game to the clean-up regimen.

NUTS & BOLTS

Matériel

Paper:

  • HPJ1124
  • Rhodia
  • G Lalo, Verge de France, white.
  • Royal - 25% rag.
  • Staples 20 lb.

Pens:

  • Sailor Somiko + TIGP F nib.
  • Esterbrooj J + M nib.
  • Platinum President Purist + 22K nib.
  • Waterman Carene + 18K factory stub nib.

______

Images:

  • Scans were made on an Epson V600 scanner; factory defaults were accepted.
  • Figures shown were scanned at 200 dpi & 24 bit colour.
  • Images linked were scanned at 300 dpi & 24 bit colour.
  • Other than cropping & straightening, no post-capture image processing was done, other than dumb-down by Photobucket & IP.Board s/w.

______

Fine Print:

  • The accuracy and relevance of this Comparison depends in great part upon consistency and reliability of matériel used.
  • Ink does not require labelling/notice to indicate (changes in) formulation, non-hazardous ingredients, batch ID, date of manufacture, etc.
  • As always, YMMV, not only from materials, methods, environment, etc., but also due to differences between the stuff I used, and that you may have.
  • Also, I entrust readers to separate opinion from fact; and to evaluate inferences and conclusions as to their merit; and to grin or grimace along the way.

Hi,

Here are Links to the Ink Reviews:

As to the plan by Lamy to replace the bottled version with iron-gall with a colour-component formula said to be the same as that found in current cartridges:

  • When/if that occurs is open to speculation http://www.fountainp...rmulation-eta/.
  • I like to think that polite but vociferous protest by consumers may have caused Lamy to reconsider that plan.
  • So that a broader readership may be aware of this development, a separate Topic in the Inky Thoughts Forum was created. If you wish to comment on the planned formula change, please contribute to that thread and/or write to Lamy. http://www.fountainp...18#entry2032018

Bye,

S1

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
