De Atramentis Aubergine

As someone who lives in Toronto, I am always surprised that De Atramentis Aubergine doesn't get much attention on this forum from the Toronto based pen lovers. You can buy it at Laywine's and it is such a gorgeous colour.

This ink behaves perfectly - no bleed through, very light shadowing considering the richness and darkness of the colour, and no feathering. There is dramatic shading, and it ranges from a deep, dark purple to a lighter colour.

The deep, rich colour of this ink, coupled with the good behaviour it displays makes it a winner in my eyes.

It has blue overtones more than red ones. If I feel like I want a more red-purple, I just add a drop or two of a rich red ink into the converter I use, something like PR Burgundy Mist.

Close up of the cool, blue undertones:

Thanks for this review! I can remember well, that I once asked about this colour since I love it (as well as the veggie itself). And lo and behold... this one came into play. i use it often. Also -- well, maybe -- a good example of how different an ink can look with different pens on dofferent papers.

I myself see in your scans a tick too much red and a half a tick too little black. but who cares? This one is IMO one great ink colour success.

It's in a broad Custom 823 nib, so it's running wet. Also, here's a comparison shot with MB Violet that might show it's actually bluer than the MB ink.

But I do think that it's got some subtle red in it. That's why it looks so gorgeous with a teeny tiny bit of red added in. :)

Thanks for the review! It's a nice eggplanty colour.

I wasn't aware Laywine's stocked De Atramentis. I'll have to check it out next time.

where in the US is this available? I googled it and the only retailer I found was Art Brown but I didn't see this color....

I've always wanted to try this ink, but it is not readily available in the US.

I've only recently become aware of this brand so the review is both timely and useful from my point of view. The colour is definitely rich and gorgeous-thanks for the review!

Thanks for the review - I'm trying out all sorts of purple of inks these days and don't know how I missed that one at Laywine's! That is one gorgeous colour.

Thank you for the review. This ink and Montblanc violet are my favorite dark purples, and they are very similar in color . In my experience, De Atramentis ink is drier than Montblanc, so I use it in pens that tend to be wet, and Motblanc with pens that tend to be dry. Don't know if I make sense, but it works for me. I like the color. Thanks for the review.

Is it fast flowing and likely to make a wet pen write thicker? Or is it dry? Or more middle of the road as far as flow?

thanks, j

actually i bought De Atramentis inks specifically due to people saying they write on the drier side...i bought them to use in my wetter pens ( BB Nib pilot and Wahl Eversharp semi flex nib ) ... and I'd say they write wonderfully well in those wet pens..not being too fast flowing but at the same time manageing to be smooth and accurate...

in the same way that the diamine majestic blue i have is far wetter i use that in my dry writing pens...i have no idea how these inks would write in a dry pen but the flow is superb in my wet pens without being over the top...does that help?

It looked more purple swabbed on paper in the B&M.

I got home and found out......

It really was Eggplant. :headsmack:

Being new to purple/violet was sort of thinking it would be more purple.

It is I guess more like when one suddenly runs into R&K Alt Gold Grun and green it is, but an odd shade. Here I got exactly what the ink bottle said.....

That is vastly unfair in these modern times.

I'm sure I can get use to it easy enough.

I now like Sepia.

There are other tones, like Sahara Grey....a grayed green I like.

Sigh....Eggplant just like it says. :roflmho:

That's my favorite color of the 62 inks I got from De Atramentis. Interestingly, it is also the favorite color of Neil Harbisson who only sees black and white, but was fitted with a camera device that converts colors into various sound frequencies so he can now hear colors.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
