This is my first Japanese Fountain Pen, and I must say, I am really impressed. I have been eyeing on this for a long time, and finally got around buying it from Pen Gallery at The Weld in KL. For about USD 340++, this is still not a cheaper range of pen, but it is one of the best writer I have used so far.

 

During the time I purchased this, I had the chance to test the Conway Stewart, Churchill FP. I was going to walk out with either the Sailor 1911 or CS, needless to say I chose the former. The CS was too large and sketchy for my taste while the Sailor is a smooth sailing nib.

 

First Impression - A very modest packaging, no frills and decent. Glad to know I'm not paying more for fancy packaging

Design 8/10 - I love cigar shape pens. I've been crazy about Meisterstuck Series and this falls into that category. It is similar in size to the current production of 146 but close to the older 146 size, as shown here (my 146R is the older one, I suspect early or mid-90s), smaller by a few mm. Overall, a very decently designed pen, not too flashy and great for everyday use and will match most of my wardrobe. The gold however, is more 'yellow' compared to other brands I have. If only they have a platinum over black, now that I will surely get!

Construction and Quality 8/10 - Well built, good attention to detail and tightly secured when cap or posted. Nothing much to complain here.

Weight and Dimension 8/10, again this is one of the lighter pens I've used, perhaps lighter than a 146. Being a shorter pen, it may be more comfortable having it posted while writing, and though I seldom or almost never post my pens while writing, I find it more comfortable to post it.

 

Refill System - 8/10, Piston! Yes! If it wasn't for Realo's piston system, I may not have bought this pen. It's fast, and simple, just like how we expect it would.

 

Nib and performance - 9/10. This is one of my favourite writer. I thought that I may be bored with a medium, but this medium nib is great. It suits my handwriting better, not too wet but smooth. Never skips and smooth as silk on most paper. It may be the sole reason that now I am addicted to Sailor nibs! It's a 21 k nib and it looks just gorgeous.

Value - 8/10. For a PMMA resin pen, at this range it is not one of the cheaper ones. Nonetheless, it is still a great buy. One of the best writer I have ever used and there's definitely are many more expensive ones that may not write as well as this one.

Summary 8.1/10 I think this will be one of my regular writers, just right size, comfortable to use, and light weight. I got an M nib this time and already I'm considering of getting the Professional Gear Realo and the Burgundy colour of both versions to collect a range of nibs in the future!

 

This will certainly spark my need to have a collection of Sailor pens!

Lovely pen and a great review. I am eyeing the full size 1911 with a fine nib and this just sealed the deal for me.

 

That nib really looks great and your writing sample is very nice as well.

Great review. I am also waiting for Sailor to get these out with a silver/platinum trim. I do have gold trimmed pens but I much rather silver trim. Please Sailor!! I would buy a Realo then like a shot!

Thanks guys,

 

I'm already looking forward to my next Sailor right after my financial has recovered. Yesterday, the 1cc ink capacity has run dry, and it takes about a week for me to finish off the ink. I write maybe about a total of a page and a half a day.

 

Cleaning and flushing was quick and easy, easier than most of MB piston pen, with less stains between the nib and the block when cleaning.

 

Trying out different colours today just to see it through the window :)

Precious indeed :), before I started collected FP, i was not even keen about and all the wonderful chemistry of what resin and acrylic is all about.

Sorry Sidestreaker for hijacking your topic but...

 

I have a lot of Sailors and they are all fantastic good writers, but only the Realo feels, for me, as a complete pen.

 

When it comes to the c/c fill Sailors I prefer the Professional Gear/Sapporo instead of the 1911/1911M. But with the Realo I prefer the 1911 designs though I have the PG Realo. Cannot explain why.

 

But we are talking details and feelings here....

Yeah, the 1911 is the one I want. Don't like the weird angles on the PG line. But I'll take any piston-filling Japanese pen, if anyone's thinking of giving them away...

I've received a quick reply of an email which I've sent earlier to Sailor and the gentleman informed me that there are no plans at the moment to create a silver/platinum trim for REALO yet, but he will discuss this with his colleagues in Japan next week.

Hi there,

 

I can't give an exact comparison, but I think the 146 has more capacity compared to the Realo. Based on the instruction manual that comes with the Realo, the capacity is 1 cc.

Nice review. I have the same pen with a broad nib and I love it. One of my favorites and the nib is just outstanding.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
