Review - Sailor Jentle - Blue-Black

Greetings all,

This review is for Sailor blue-black. While I love the performance of this ink; I’m not crazy about the color- but that is a personal choice- as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I prefer blue-based blue-blacks and Sailor’s is clearly a gray blue; I would say graphite gray with a slight blue hue to it. Other than that, Sailor blue-black is a solid performer; albeit a little too dry for my tastes.

The review below pretty much speaks for itself; however if you have any questions or comments; please feel free to voice them.

One of the blackest blue-black I e'er have seen! Very nice though, you said it has a bit of shadow....how about feathering on cheaper papers?

Greetings TRP,

I detected very slight feathering when using a wet pen, (Waterman Phileas, medium nib), on the cheaper grade papers such as Copy paper or note pad paper. Nothing that would stop me from using it though.

Very nice review, Sean! Thanks. I have 3 of the Sailor Jentle inks and they are all very nicely behaved while being on the dry side; Grenade has become a particular favorite.

Is this one of the nano inks that needs special treatment? I don't really understand the difference, sorry.

Hello CBM,

Thanks.

Fear not; the "Nano" Series inks have carbon based pigments, (much like India ink); the "Jentle Ink" Series, (which this is from), is your garden variety fountain ink. ;)

All the best,

Thanks for the informative review. This ink was recommended to me as a possible cure for nib creep experienced with two of my pens, each of which features an Art Deco styled inlaid nib. Looks like you give it a good grade for not promoting nib creep; good to hear. I look forward to trying it out.

Thank you for the review. I too am not a huge fan of black inks (including blue blacks), and I have found the Jentle inks do not hold up in fade tests. However, I do really like the Sailor Nano inks. Thank you for the review.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I use this only in cartridges - which show a tad lighter in hue. I agree it's a wonderfully behaved ink.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
