Inks With A "sheen"

I think from looking back that it's Sailor's nano blue black ink. I was even thinking of getting some ($33 a bottle) but from reading around I don't think it'd be good for me. I like to keep ink in pens for months at a time, not days. OTOH, the Prera I might use for it is pretty easy to take the feed and nib out of for cleaning.

I cannot see a name for the ink….

Woops, sorry. I think it'll be a disappointment for many people to know that it's just a gel pen. Mitsubishi Uni Signo Broad blue-black. The 0.5mm also displays sheen in noticeable amounts, but it is not as in-your-face as the broad pen, which I otherwise am not a huge fan of personally. The 0.5mm is about as broad as I normally like to go, and is an all-around excellent pen.

The Signo Broad in normal blue is also a sheener, but without quite as much punch as the blue-black.

The lines at the bottom of those pictures were Sailor Seiboku, which will shade nicely and has some sheen, but even from the only broad nib I have doesn't sheen quite as apparently as the Signo blue-black.

I was just doing some random writing with my Ahab with Diamine Onyx Black in it, and all of the sudden I was astounded to see that it had a green sheen! I don't know what caused it. The paper is Clairfontaine.

I don't want to cross-post photos, but I thought this photo of Sailor Seiboku would fit this thread pretty well:

Robert,

Personally, I appreciate the cross-posting of photos, and I have done it myself. I can come back to this thread to see new additions, whereas I may have missed an individual ink review.

Thanks for all your great input!

So here's PR Ebony Blue (Sheaffer Triumph Imperial M) and Diamine China Blue (Eversharp Symphony B) on onionskin from thepapermillstore.com. In this case, the sheen is actually more impressive in person. I recently moved my office setup, so my new lighting isn't playing well with sheen-catching photography.

Good job. My original photo of Seiboku (the single word 'Sailor', above) was an attempt to capture it with indoor lighting. However, my second attempt (the little paragraph) was using bright window light. As long as the light largely comes from a single direction, sheen has been pretty easy to pick up. The added bonus is that the colors come out a bit more accurately as well, with fuller spectral response.

I observed something similar with Platinum Mix free Aurora Blue. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

As promised long ago, here are some pictures on the onion skin paper. Sorry this took so long, but the lighting in my new locale stinks for sheen hunting.

So, here are (top-bottom) Diamine Twilight (Safari M), Sailor Sky High (Rotring Core XL), and Iroshi Ku-jaku (Sheaffer Triumph Imperial M).

Massive sheen using a generic blue cartridge (usaoutletstore on eBay) and having it get more and more concentrated as I made tally marks over the course of a few hours. Wonder if pelikan blue would be a beautiful sheen ink if you just let, say, 4ml sit in an open vial until there was only 1-2ml left. Maybe Penman is just sweetened condensed ink :)

Thanks for starting this thread, shaylenwilliams! I love these types of ink. I've got a lot of inks to add to my buy list…

No problem! We all add to it every so often, so be sure you stop in a stay updated! I'm always discovering new ones, with the help of several enabling friends and pen-pals.

If you do find any blacks that fit your search, be sure to post pics here!

Diamine Steel Blue, in Noodler's Ahab on unknown cardstock:

WOW! I know that your photos here aim to catch the sheen and may not show accurate color, but does that really how Diamine Steel Blue look like up close? (The swab by Gouletpens shows it more 'turquoisey', so I'm a bit undecided now :hmm1: )

Thank you ever so much for doing this, Shaylen. I think this interestingly definitive thread should be pinned

You're very welcome!

From what I remember (been a while since I've used this ink)... Steel Blue was much darker than what some of the swabs show. I'd guess that it might compare favorably to Iroshi Ku-jaku, but I wouldn't call it a dead ringer. It's a lovely ink, but I had wanted to compare it as a "Tiffany Blue"... which it certainly is not.

These were done on the onion skin which can be found here

This is all the same paper; I tried to white balance a bit, but once again, the objective here is to show sheen, not necessarily a true representation on the ink color itself.

Gorgeous results, Shaylen. I immediately went to the website to pick up a ream, just to discover they have a $250 minimum order for international shipping. Too bad, as this is really neat, and I love the idea of writing notes and letters on onion skin paper.

That ebony blue is really spectacular there.

That stinks! I'm not sure if the paper can be sourced elsewhere? My ream is wrapped in paper that says "Schoellershammer"... so you may be able to find it at a different retailer.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
