If I understand correctly, the pigment inks cannot (or should not) be used in FP's...??? I'm not sure if this is true, or a "rumor".

These inks are made for fountain pens. They are "nano" pigments, so they don't clog fine feed passages. They are, however, quite waterproof when dry and require more maintenance than a dye based non-waterproof ink.

Good to know, thanks for the clarification!!!

And,they are remarkably water resistant: I wrote a few lines on a piece of paper, and immediately walked it to the kitchen and held under running water. Eventually the paper disintegrated, but the writing didn't even run...a-f-ing-mazing

@ shaylenwilliams: oh ok, I was thinking that our eyes "automatically" correct for white balance, but cameras not always very good. As result, a white balance correction would simply make the colors of the pictures more similar to what our eyes see when looking at the ink in the real world. But if the goal is to highlight the effect without color fidelity, that's fine.

HOLY Private Reserve Tanzanite! This ink almost looks sparkly!!! Pen is Monteverde Sleeping Beauty Broad, paper is Staples Bagasse.

(Now with 100% more white balance!)

Private Reserve Electric DC Blue has a nice red sheen on it when written with a fat nib on Rhodia Dotpad. I've seen a similar effect with Sailor Jentle Yama-Dori. Rhodia Dotpad is the paper you want for sheen; I've not seen a nice sheen on any other paper so far.

It is indeed!

I will try to keep it updated as I come across more "sheens" in the wild!

Lovely! The Momiji is so gorgeous in person - will definitely be adding that ink to my wish list! I think it would be amazing for grading. Thanks for posting these images!

It does?!?! That's one I have certainly NEVER seen, and I have that ink and use it frequently. Is it a red or gold sheen?
Is the sheen something that is easily noticed? Or do you have to tilt you head, close one eye, spin 'round in circles 5 times and howl at the moon...

It all depends on the pen and paper. Staples Bagasse is the best I've found for making it noticeable. Also, the wetter the pen, the better. Lighting plays a role. At night, at my writing desk, they are most obvious. Of the above, Asa-gao is the most subtle. If you've got the right factors, the sheen is right there, no magic sorcery needed, but if the variables aren't in your favor, you could miss it.

private reserve dc supershow blue. I got a package with a letter in this ink, and it just sparkled at me. I had to get a bottle. Looks best on shiny CF or Rhodia paper. Not so great on matte surfaces like copy papers.

I have Electric DC Blue, which I bought specifically for it's "sheen". It's okay, but the shade of blue doesn't do much for me, and I've had clogging/flow issues with it. I like Ebony Blue from PR better, and it still has the pretty red sheen. My favorite blue with a red sheen has to be Sky High.

It seems to me that cool colors are granted a 'red' sheen and warm colors get a golden one.
When I saw that this thread was about "sheen", PR Ebony Blue immediately came to mind. I am fascinated and perplexed by that ink. Heck if I know why!

This was red in a vintage flex Diamond Point.

Looks like we have a new (albeit rather subtle) member of the sheen family! :bunny01:

Thank you, Shaylen for taking the time to do all this! Lovely!

You're very welcome. Today's contribution is courtesy of excitement over getting some inks AND the desire to put off writing a paper!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China. With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters. Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed. And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments.. I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
