This is my first review, it's a sample of Diamine Oxblood kindly sent to me by Carlc. Please feel free to let me know if I can improve on anything.

Forgive me for translating some of the salient points here, but I don't feel my writing is the most legible:

General Description:

The appearance of the ink in the vial actually scared me slightly, it really does look like blood! Dries to a very nice red / brown, and is muted enough to use at work.

Flow / Lubrication:

Smooth wet line much like Diamine Imperial Purple. (I actually think this writes a bit wetter, supported by the longer drying time. - This was added as an afterthought after I'd taken the photo, sorry.)

Appearance, Odour, Comparison with Other Brands / Shades:

As noted above, looked like a vial full of blood! No odour. I don't think a fine stiff nib like a Rotring would show shading off well.

Summary / Conclusions:

5ml turns out to be quite a generous amount and will probably last about a month. Nevertheless this will most likely be the next ink I buy.

If I were to limit my inks to only 5, Diamine Oxblood would be near the top of that elite group, very near to Diamine Syrah. If the US ever decides to convert to communism, I hope that the government-approved inks are Diamine. I guess it would mean that we have to conquer that country, or at least repatriate them.

One of my favorite inks. I use it in some medium stubs I have and you can get some shading. Very well behaved ink even on copy/printer paper from work. Great review Thanks.

You have great taste. If you don't mind, could you share your top-5 inks list?

Diamine Oxblood

Diamine Syrah

Diamine Pumpkin

Diamine Chocolate Brown

Iroshizuku Yama Budo

I do have one pen inked with Diamine Green Black, but cannot get excited about green ink.

I guess you could say that I ended up with this short list through a process of natural selection. After 4 months, there was nothing left standing in my inked pens except those 6. Diamine Pumpkin is probably the one that most folks here would say "Bleah" to, but it is a very cheerful orange, and I have not found nib crud to be a problem. Like my nose in winter, I tend to wipe the nib of my fountain pen with tissue frequently, so nothing ever builds up on any of my nibs.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
