P. W. Akkerman - Hopjesbruin

I recently picked up a couple colors of the Akkerman ink, beyond the Oranje Boven (which I love!)

Usually, I'm not fond of brown inks, unless they have other yellow/orange shades to them.

The Akkerman Hopjesbruin is pretty nice.

Below are two different images of the same pages, with slightly different adjustment on the levels.

Since my writing is terrible, here's the transcript:

Very quick review:

Akkerman Hopjesbruin

Orange-Brown (more brown than orange or yellow)

* Good flow

* Nice Shading

Slow drying, at least on Rhodia

Like a lighter version of Noodler's Golden Brown.

I hope someone can do a comparison of Hopjesbruin with Herbin's Ambre de Birmanie. They look similar, caramelly, but Hopjesbruin shades to brown.

I don't have any of the Herbin ink. If someone has the Ambre de Birmanie, and will do/post a comparison, I'll be happy to send a sample of the Hopjesbruin to them.

(I'd prefer someone in the US, simply due to the easier shipping process.)

Thanks Greg! Nice review. Even though it is quick, you still get a pretty good first impression. It looks nice, I love inks with shading.

And it's quite a wet ink, like other Akkerman's inks (Voorhout Violet and Rood Haags Pluche).

BTW, I don't own Hopjesbruin, but I do have Ambre de Birmanie on my shelf. My impression is that they are quite different. Although I once added one drop of dark brown ink (no brand) in my cartridge that was filled with AdB, and then a nice golden shade appeared, much closer to this Hopjesbruin. But maybe someone here can do the comparison with both inks and give a better answer.

Passions need to be followed and shared

The oranje boven is lovely......You have peaked my interest in akkerman with that color.

Now if only Noodler's would make a refillable dry-erase marker, I would buy a lifetime supply....

Not Ambre de Birmanie at all, but at least in my monitor it looks identical to Diamine's Golden Brown.

+1. There is another thread somewhere that has drawn the conclusion that several of Akkerman's inks are repackaged D.I. This one I 'd be willing to bet is just such a one.

Wow this is a gorgeous color. Did anyone figure out if the Akkerman inks really are repackaged Diamine?

It is a really wonderful ink in a pen with generous flow that allows shading to shine. Regardless of final maker, a very special ink.

I think the interest in final maker is based on availability and cost of the actual product to the purchaser. Akkerman's is difficult to obtain at a reasonable cost to the consumers outside Europe, whereas Diamine is not. If they are one and the same.....:hmm1:

But that Akkerman's bottle.....:puddle:

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
