Lamy Blue Black

Hey there FPN, I figured today I would wrie a review of my newest ink acquisition... Lamy Blue Black. I love this ink and I do say that it is now hands down my favorite blue black over Mont Blanc, Waterman, and even Pelikan... Hmm never thought it would beat Pelikan! Anyway here you are! And on my monitor, the colour came out extremely close.

I've been using this for about a year now...

I'm glad to hear that it tops someone's list... I have not tried any other blue-blacks, and I'm happy with the LAMY.

The bottle is nice too... and I really like the shading too

Thanks for the re-assurance.

You are most welcome! I have tried a few now, and I have to say this one seems to be my ultimate favorite blue black now... For myself, MB tends to run too dry, and seems "sticky", Waterman isn't even a true blue black ;) , and Pelikan is sure close, but the real lack of blue and overpowering grey make it a second choice!

It might be one I'd be prepared to have a go with; after I've used up my 4001!

I've got this, registrar's ink and MB Midnight, and I find none of them exceptionally dry, although this ink will slow down an over enthusiastic feed reliable in my experience. I reckon the notion that this ink is dry has arisen in part because it's an unusually pale colour for an iron gall.

I'd say that Lamy Blue Black is probably the prettiest of the commonly available iron galls.

Hi,

Thanks for the Review!

I've been revisiting this ink after some time away.

It seems I have rather a different view on some of the subjective aspects, yet I fully agree with the more objective ones. Perhaps the Lamy ink from a Lamy pen generates synergy that I have yet to encounter. (?)

I concur about the colour : your scans on my monitor have great fidelity to ink-on-paper samples to hand. Also the ability to generate appreciable shading from a narrow nib.

I found the colour itself too simple, lacking the subtle complexity of other i-g BlBk inks, (MBMBl & R&K Salix), yet it does indeed have the 'it' factor unique to i-g inks' appearance - which is not evident on the monitor, (nor any scan I can make either.)

I've been running this ink in my TWSBI and find they are a really great combination to use when I just want to write something when I'm in my office. It dries fast, resists feathering, it can survive a small water splash, and the color is never wrong. The great bottle is a real plus as well.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

Thanks for the review! What is the largest quantity this ink can be purchased in? I am only finding 50ml bottles online at the moment.

That's the largest bottle by Lamy. They don't seem to have those 1L bottles like Pelikan.

I can verify that, the blue black comes only in 50ml :(

My bottle of Lamy BB is just too pale for me. I don't get the dark color like your written review. I have to let it sit around in my pen to concentrate (oxidize?) before I'm comfortable with it and then it only looks like your bottom-most swab. Works much better when I mix a little extra blue to it bringing it closer to your waterman/pelikan swabs.

How does it compare in wetness to montblanc blue black? I never tried lamy BB because I always read MBBB was wetter.

If you leave the ink for some time in the bottle, you may find that it turns into darker, richer blue-black hues.

Of course, it might required your filling the pen and leaving the pen untouched for a few days, if not weeks.

Incidentally, I noticed the same with Waterman blue-black that fresh out of the ink bottles looks more like a washed-out blue jeans blue and only reaches "maturity" after some time in the pen.

Nice review! Good comparisons!!

For me MB and Lamy are both the "best" blue-blcks available.

Each has its own advantage. See other reviews.

Price doesn't matter for me... if I like it and can afford it, I buy it.

Happy to hear so many of you like this ink. I just struggle to come to terms with it. In several different pens, I get the same impression - pale, and dry as chalk! Maybe it behaves differently in different climates or at different altitudes. Or, I was just unlucky with a dud batch. Nice bottle though.

Don't mean to be contrary, but I love the way Visconti Blue looks on your scan!

Lamy B-B looks pleasant and sounds very user-friendly. Maybe I'll try some -- after I get through the hundreds of milliliters of various diluted Noodler's blue-blacks that I have on hand.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
