Sailor Sky High Vs. Summer Sky Vs. Kon-Peki (Chromatography)

Well I was surprised how close the three of these inks are. They are veritably three blue peas in a pod. I used a wider, wet Speedball (C-4) reservoir nib just to see more of the secondary red sheen effect from pooled ink. In retrospect, being so wet may have made them look even more similar. Close up and in person, there is very slight differences between the Sailors, with Summer Sky #210 having more of the darker blue which you can see in the chromatography strips. It also has a little more of the red sheen than the new Sky High #241. Both Sailors are a shade darker blue than the Irosh kon-peki...but as you can see it is close.

So if I had to get one bottle out of all three, I would choose the Summer Sky. Having said that, the differences between all three are subtle enough that it will come down to how it writes with a given pen and paper to make an ultimate choice.

Below are thumbs of photo and scans.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

Thanks kindly for the comparison, SamCapote! Appreciate it.

Very glad to see all three together. I have Kon-Peki and Sky High, have really enjoyed the former yet cannot afford it. Not the same yet Sky High is a very good alternative IMHO. Try as I might I do not get the 'red sheen' thing with this ink, though. (Using calibrated monitor, as well, and do not see it really in the above scans/photos or in person on Staples Eco or Rhodia.) I'm not disagreeing at all... I'm just sayin' I don't see it. BTW: Playing with plain old Sailor Blue I do see it whereas before I didn't pay attention & hadn't noticed it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
