Lamy 2000 - Fp, Bp & Mp

I know; you've all got one, had one, or are going to get one in the near future. The fountain pen is one of the touchstones of this site, and rightly so. I can't think of another pen that can be described as classic, modern, rugged, elegant, value for money, and a superlative writing experience, all at once!

But once you have your FP, you are obviously a fan of the design and so you need the matching biro and pencil. Both have been executed very well, following the design of the FP. The clips and barrel materials are identical, with the pencil's button mimicking the FP's cap end and the ballpoint's button made out of the same brushed steel as the tip. The different button shapes are to allow you to quickly locate the right instrument in your jacket pocket, which is difficult with some other sets I've had.

In terms of feel, I prefer the more slender barrels of both biro and pencil. I find in certain situations that my fingers slip on the barrel of the fountain pen (which can on occasion look a little bit like Thunderbird 2 in comparison!), but this doesn't happen with the thinner barrels. The Makrolon plastic makes for a warm and organic feel. I find that I like the weight of the pencil more than the ballpoint, which feels very lightweight especially compared to the fountain pen.

My pencil has 0.5mm leads but there is also a 0.7mm version. This makes it great for sketching and more technical note-taking. I must say though, that despite being comfortable to write with, I am not a fan of the Lamy ballpoint refill. I find the colour to be not very strong and the ball to be not particularly smooth, and this tempers my feelings towards it. I use it, but only when I've taken it out with the fountain pen. There are other better ballpoints out there.

The Lamy 2000 also comes as a rollerball (with the same dimensions as the FP), and a four-colour pen (same dimensions as the ballpoint).

I've got 'em all and I prefer the four-in-one to the standard BP. The rollerball has a nice feel in hand, but the Lamy refill leaves something to be desired.

Yes, but how is the FP? Thanks for sharing.

Check my sig - there's probably one in amongst that bunch, and if not there are approx. 2000 other reviews to choose from.

The point of this and the other reviews I'm doing currently is to look at the non-FP element of these sets.

Thank you for this review. I have been "away' from FPN, but now I am looking to get a Lamy 2000 ballpoint or a 4 color ball point, but I wasn't sure how thick the 4 color-ball point was. From what I read the 4 color is the same size as the regular ball point, and therefore it would be efficient to have the 4 color one.

Thank you for the information!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
