Is This Pen Italian? Which Brand Might It Be?

Readymade

Firstly, this isn't an April Fool's joke.

Found recently at a flea market. Looks Italian based on the shape and celluloid, but imprint thoroughly worn down. At best I can make out faint traces in a stylised cursive -- "auria"? "aurax"? "aurex"? "aurea"? It may have been foil hot-stamped onto the barrel and subsequently lost.

- Fairly large. Just a bit shorter than a Pelikan M800:

- Nib is a a large Waterman semi-flex IDEAL 14K nib with a “5” on the bottom is mated with what looks like a Vacumatic feed.

- The clip seems too small for its holes. Probably a replacement? The holes the tabs on the sides of the clip fit into are clearly visible, and the clip looks like it came from a Waterman 32 but is smooth and has a differently-shaped end.

The workmanship seems second-tier:

- Traces of polish stuck between the cap bands and their grooves suggest the bands were once plated, but the bands themselves are uneven.

- The barrel, cap and blind cap are thick black and pearlescent burgundy celluloid, with a few transparent patches which have ambered. The button hole at the end of the barrel is off-centre, and the blind cap is not completely flush with the barrel.

Anyway, it’s a textbook button-filler. Resacced with a #18 sac.

Does anyone have any idea? Any help would be appreciated :)

Aurea was an Italian brand of unknown origin. There is not very much information on this company. Like many smaller brands, the pens seem to have been produced by various manufacturers for Aurea.

"Aurea" is surely an italian pen,

maybe a Montegrappa production, but nobody knows.....

Is the mark of your pen like this?

@Ambros: Yes! That photo of the imprint was just what I was looking for. Thank you!

btw, the nib is most likely from a Waterman Commando (1942-46). Thanks to rhosygell over in this thread - https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/191283-which-waterman-models-had-this-nib/

The one Readymade showed looks like a Montegrappa but the one shown by Ambros looks like it could be made by Columbus. Ah...the mystery.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
