My Very First Danitrio Tame-Nuri

Hi all,

 

I love to read those threads where people show and tell what the mailman has brought them! So I decided to make one myself. This is a picture-heavy mini review of my new Danitrio tame-nuri Mikado which arrived from England today. Enjoy!

 

My poor mailman has more "small packets" from England in his cart than he used to these days. This small packet happened to be rather large though:

 

 

What might be in there? Let's see. It is rectangular - and well protected!

 

 

After I have armed myself with some scissors and penetrated at least 5 layers of bubble wrap I'm slowly getting excited. It is a plain black box:

 

 

Inside that black box - is another box! A beautiful one in red lacquer finish, carrying the promising word "Urushi".

 

 

Time to open it! Prepared for the wow-effect. However, the precious content is concealed by one more layer - a beautiful silk pen kimono (at this point I'm feeling like playing with Matrjoschkas). The box also contains an eye-dropper for filling and a polishing cloth.

 

 

Then, finally - ahh! Here it is.

 

 

A look at the large bi-color nib.

 

 

This pen originally came with a fine nib. Tora-Pens in the UK, where I purchased it, offered me to send it to Greg Minuskin for a retip and ground of my liking - free of charge. Couldn't say no there! So it is now a pretty 0.8 mm cursive italic. Thank you, Tora-Pens!

 

 

I don't have any experience with eyedropper pens yet and as I didn't want to rush anything I just dipped the pen for the writing sample. After those few words I can already say that the nib feels very smooth when writing even though the tip looks very sharply edged. I might add a "proper" writing sample and more info later on.

I filled it meanwhile (with Caran d'Ache "Sunset" ink, matching the body of the pen pretty well) and played a little with the shutoff valve. I imagined it might be hard to find the point where just the right amount of ink comes out to support the nib, but I noticed that there really doesn't seem to be much to it. Unscrew it a bit, there's ink flowing. Unscrew a bit more, there's a bit more ink flowing etc. It will write nicely without either way, no skipping or anything. There's also a little flex in that huge nib.

 

 

Here's a writing sample showing the results. I'm not perfectly familiar with the nib yet because it is a lot crisper than the CIs I have used yet and therefore demands a different writing style. It's perfectly smooth on most strokes but on some others (like the light upstrokes after a g, y, j etc.) I hit the edge of the nib which neither feels nor looks very nice. Well, I'm sure I'll find out how to avoid this in time.
