J Herbin Vert Pre

Thanks to alecgold for the ink & pen!

Sadly, no matter how I scan this page, the ink isn't quite coming across. I usually have no problems with colours coming across properly after scanning. It should look more...lime.

Not a huge fan of this green (or Herbin's Vert D'olive) I love there Vert D'Empire but it isn't very Irish.

Thanks for the review.

In Ottawa? Check out The Ottawa Pen Posse

Ah see, I love the Vert Olive, but mostly because it matches the color of my jeep. :D

ooh, cool, another review! I really like them so, when you have the time, keep them coming!

It is a difficult color to get right in a scan and on screen, being a light and airy color. I have forgotten how it wrote, but I guess it did all right!

I got a sample of this and find it has very limited use. I guess it's a nice ink, but it's hard to read under just about any circumstances I would use it. It's just too light and seems a little "off" whatever I mean by that....

I do use Herbin Vert Pre (and Rouge Caroubier)daily: Chosen specifically for their low intensity as I use them for annotating on printouts where I want to be able to see the handwritten note whilst not obscurring the content of the document. Their lightness helps with this where more saturated inks would be a problem.

I do find Vert Pre unsuitable for any normal notetaking where any extensive writing with this colour is a strain to read.

  • 5 months later...

I have permanently inked a Lamy Vista with a B nib with this ink. It works wonderfully to annotate notes taken in Waterman blue black and Parker Quink Black, amongst others. It really makes handwritten and printed items stand out quite a lot. I am really pleased with this combination.

I love Vert Pre, but I do not like that it is so light. I was successful in darkening a small batch of it with a bit of Eclat de Saphir and Bleu de Pervenche. The result was a few shades darker, and not at all teal (just what I wanted). I will try to post a picture whenever I can get to my scanner.

Finally, a place where being obsessed with pens and paper is the norm...

Bought this ink since I was looking for a lighter green than my Sailor Epinard, but found this to be too light! I agree with the other posters, this looks like highlighter ink. Its not too useful for me, since I use my pens for notetaking and for journaling. Qite disappointed with this ink.

Should've gone for the vert empire...

Luckily, I was gifted today with a bottle of MB Irish Green, which is quite similar to Vert Empire. Good thing the Herbin I got was only 30ml... Might have to unload this ink...

It look similar to Rohrer + Klingner Alt Goldgrun.

Herbin Lierre Sauvage is more lively, but I find it too animated for anything beyond a correspondence card.

Thanks for the review

No, not at all, that's just the picture. IRL it's a nice vibrant lime green.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
