Waterman Expert Cityline - Fountain Pen Review

Little background!!! So in the season of getting gifts, I got this as... A gift... Surprising RIGHT?!

As I said... A little :)

Appearance and Design 8/10

If you could describe a pen as business like, this would take the cake! I'm not saying it's boring, because it's beautiful, but it doesn't blow me out of the water. That saying, it doesn't mean I don't like the look of this pen, because I would TOTALLY use it at school! If I had the guts to bring it to school... The camera doesn't justify the actual color of the pen, it's gray. But not boring gray, it's a deep, rich, bold gray! The clip is also eye candy as well! It's not a flashy pen but it is very elegant in it's own sense!

Now I bet you're wondering why I, a High school student who is 16, has a book on Business and Marketing... Well I got it at a book sale for $.35 when it actually costs $75!!! I'm frugal I know :)

Construction and Quality 10/10

Top NOTCH! Well... Apart from one little itty bitty thing... The grip, it's great and all, but I can feel the little lines that stick out from the molded plastic. Not a good thing, quite a small turn off, but a turn off none the less... Other than that! It's amazing! The cap clicks on reassuringly and when you post it, it clicks on and doesn't touch the sides of the body so there won't be any scratches!!! Very sturdy, hefty feel, almost as if you were to get fed up in your boring office job filling out tax reforms, like you would with this pen, that if you stabbed a passing coworker in the eye it would stand up to the challenge! Or... Ummm.... Nevermind! :)

Weight and Dimensions 8/10

Hefty!!! It has some weight to it, because if you would want to own this type of pen, you would be a business man and would LOVE status and some weight in your pen!

Cap on: 5.5 inches

Cap posted: 6 inches

Cap off: 5 inches

Weight: 32g

That was a joke by the way! It feels really nice because you CAN feel it, it's heavy enough to be noticeable but not so heavy that it kills your hand. A very nice feel, but I've held nicer...

Nib and Performance 10/10

Ohhh man.... Talk about buttery!!!! After not writing with it for a week (I know bad idea...) it picked up right away! It says it's fine, but it writes on the medium side, still a fine but a very thick fine... If that made any sense to anyone! A stainless steel nib which does it's job amazingly! Probably my favorite writer out of all of mine so far.

Filling System and Maintenance 7/10

Converter/cartridge... *yawn* Nothing really interesting, it does it's job well. Not amazing... Maintenance, nothing to report since I've only had it for less than a month!

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n527/ModiHammarstedt/IMG_0049.jpg?t=1296519485

Cost and Value N/A

Ummm I can't really comment on this since I didn't buy it... I got it as a gift, so essentially it's priceless! If you want to look up the price go ahead! But I'd say just for the fact that this writes amazingly, it's worth it :)

Conclusion 43/50

A solid B! It's a good pen, if you have the money, I wouldn't say rush to buy this pen, but if it's appealing, it WILL NOT let you down! I love this pen, it is so much fun to write with!

Great Review! I was considering this pen until I learned about it's size. It reminds me of the Parker Sonnet--well they are owned by the same company.....

My Stepdad has a Sonnet and I have used it many times... Yes this pen is A LOT like the sonnet!

  • 3 months later...

Nice catch, this one  When I got my own Waterman Expert, I saw this one, too. I liked it quite a lot, but I preferred the Deluxe, and I could get only one...

I have quite small hands, and a big heavy pen would not be good for long note taking sessions.

I own a Sonnet, and I wouldn't call it a large pen. It's not that heavy either IMO.

The Noodler's Piston Fill pen is evidently quite small. Do you have one of those? (I'm planning to buy one within the next month or so.)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
