Jinhao 5000 Dragon - Fountain Pen Review

So recently one of my best friends has really gotten into fountain pens because of me, and we started talking and I told him to look at some pens on isellpens.com (no affiliation) and I wondered why I haven't looked on that website in a long time! So I wandered over to the Jinhao page and this pen just struck me!!!! So it came right after the last day of finals for the semester... And let me tell you!!!! Well... You can just read the review!

First Impressions 10/10

Simply stunning... That's the best word I could think of!!!! What's even better is I got a note from Todd from isellpens.com which made it even better!!!!

Honestly... Just amazing...

Appearance and Design 10/10

If I could rate it an infinite amount of points I would... But I can't so 10 it is!!!! It is like other Chinese pens that try to be extremely over the top and have 'bling' everywhere, and let me tell you, it WORKS for this pen. It is gorgeous (hopefully my girlfriend doesn't read this and think there's competition!!!) and I'm a sucker for over the top looking pens since I have many simple business like pens in my possession already! Now I can't wait to use this at school to see how many heads I turn :)

Pictures don't do it any bit of justice!!! Even if the camera is really good! This thing is flashy!!!!!!

Construction and Quality 8/10

Quality is top notch, the only iffy things are when I unscrew the body it makes a weird clicking noise and while screwing it in it's VERY unstable... But once it's in it stays in!!! Another thing is the cap... You need to PULL to get it off, and when you post it you really need to shove it in there! But other than those minor things, very good build quality! Well since it's built with brass it better be sturdy!

Weight and Dimensions 8/10

This pen is... HEAVY!!!! 40g inked! Why inked? Because I think it's pointless to mass it without ink because who's gonna write with an uninked pen?! It's 13.5 cm long (cap on), 16 cm long (posted), 12 cm long (unposted) so it is quite a long pen, but I wouldn't post it because it's so heavy and long it could seriously mess up your writing! But apart from that, I like a weight when I write, I'm tired of writing with a pen that seems like it could float away...

Nib and Performance 10/10

Quite simply, the BEST nib I've ever own! It is wet, and it flows very smoothly, not too smooth so that it writes like it's on air, but the perfect 'smoothness' for me! A little bit of tooth which is also good. I ordered a medium I believe and it's more like a fine... Which is even better since I can use it at school! The nib itself is 18K Gold Plated and it has Jinhao written on it, probably the best looking nib I own! Doesn't dry out easilly, and writes right away (no pun intended)

Filling system 7/10

Standard C/C filler... Does it's job! The converter that it comes with has a brass type ring around it with Jinhao imprinted on it, so I guess that's a plus... It works!

Cost and Value 10/10

Take a guess at how much this pen cost!!!! .................. DONE! And nope, you're wrong! It cost $35... THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS!!!!! That is an amazing value for this quality of a pen! It's stunning and it writes like a dream and... I cannot say enough good things about this pen!!!!

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n527/ModiHammarstedt/IMG_0039.jpg?t=1295707437

Conclusion 63/70

The best pen I own... If you have $35 laying around and you want a good pen... GET THIS PEN!!!! I highly recommend it!!!!

I do like some bling and that one certainly fits the bill. I really enjoyed your enthusiasm in your review.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

Thanks!!!! I tend to be quite happy and animated ALL THE TIME :) I think it makes a review of anything much more interesting than just saying things blandly (no offense to anyone)

Very striking and amazing VFM! I liked your review.

  • 1 year later...

...it's a pen I'll look out for myself.

I did look out for it, and agree in large part with the review.

I had actually totally forgotten about this review and posted my own here: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/214811-jinhao-5000-filigree-overlay-pen-review/ but the conclusion is similar - get one.

Richard.

Well done. The box alone is worth the price.

I've had 3 Jinhaos. They're good writers, but a little on the heavy side.

With your particular Jinhao, eventually ink will seep into that brass O ring on the grip there and stain your finger everytime you write and touch it on accident. I thoroughly cleaned mine, dried it, and added a lil clear 2-ton epoxy to prevent that. In the end, the Jinhaos are just too heavy and gaudy for me to lug around everywhere, so I think I'm done with them.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
