Abraxas Blue Black

Abraxas Blau Schwarz, was one of three Abraxas inks given to me by my wife. I had not heard of them before but the Blue Black has become a favorite.

The ink comes in small bottles with cork stoppers and a seal. I understand Abraxas has a small shop in Basel Switzerland and they will mix colours on site. Here are three bottles pictured with a Parker 51 to give scale.

They have a good range of inks, but not all are suitable for fountain pens. This ink is number 22 in their range.

It is free flowing, but is slow drying and not really waterproof. It is not saturated, but shades well.

Compared to Pelikan Blue black it has a hint more green. It is more of a very dark turquoise.

Generally a very well behaved ink that I will happily put into any of my vintage pens. I was very surprised how well it was paired with a Hero 616 with a Fine nib.

The bottom of the scan is missing the four inks compared left to right are Abraxas Blue Black, Pelikan Blue Black, Diamine Prussian Blue and Quink Solv-X Black. I included the last one, because in a very dry pen, the shade does look similar to the Abraxas

I found this description of their inks on their website

"Finest calligraphy- and drawing ink "Classic Line", available in thirteen different colour shades (2 vegetable colours, 8 nature identical colours, 3 metallic colours). Useable for all writing tools as well as paint-brushes (even for air brush!), reduceable with water and freely mixable, not all colours are useable for fountain pens (see colour table)! Corked glassbottles with seal and handcoloured label, content 30ml"

The ink does not suit my fancy, looks too blue, but the bottles!

The voice of this guitar of mine, at the awakening of the morning, wants to sing its joy;

I sing to your volcanoes, to your meadows and flowers, that are like mementos of the greatest of my loves;

If I am to die away from you, may they say I am sleeping, and bring me back home.

After seeing this review I had to get my own bottle. The bottle is awesome and I am a little hesitant to open it. The bottom of the cork is stained a beautiful color of dark blue - not the drury grayish blue that is common with blue/blacks. It's only fitting that the first pen to get a fill should be a Caran d'Ache. The downside is the cost of shipping to USA. Does anyone know of an Abraxas retailer here in the states?

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
