here's the unit with diaphragm attached. this is the one the pen came with (from ebay!!) it just needed shellac to hold it in place. otherwise perfect! edit: turns out shellac is not necessary. hmm.. oh well. now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

congrats on the restoration  nice pen and nice review

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I love these, too, as well as the duofold vac. Don't ask me why, but I also love the streamlined look of the single jewel model, and just don't cotton to the jewel on the blind cap.

Nice pictures and review.

Best,

Beautiful! I have one being restored right now. I hope I like it as much as you do. I have a feeling I will.. :)

Very nice, I've got one just like yours, except in blue. The Vac Major may be the all time prettiest pen.

The moment we want to believe something, we suddenly see all the arguments for it, and become blind to the arguments against it.

I share your delight with the vac major! I have two of them in brown; one has the plastic filler and the other has the aluminum pre war filler (double jewel also). The two tone nibs are a delight to use and to watch in motion. One of these days I'll find an oversize model in my price range. Thank you for the enjoyable handwritten review!

Love your review and the sketches!

I share your delight with these pens! I picked one up a while back and had it restored, and fell in love with it. It became my "goes to work every day" pen. It was soon joined by two other vac majors (in emerald and gold pearl) that are just as delightful. I lucked out that they were in working order- I at least expected that they would need work on the filling system.

So, now three pens travel with me to work every day. They make filling out even routine forms delightful. I need to get a case for these since they travel with me!

Nice review. I really like the pictures of the insides. I have a Vacumatic being repaired and its nice to know what is actually inside these pens.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
