Interesting, and glad to see it is a good ink. However, for the price, wouldn't it be better just to use Aurora Black?

I like the Edelstein Mandarin I bought, but it won't be a permanent rotation kind of ink. (Habanero fills that spot for me.)

Best, greg

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

That was my thought. It sounds like you get an ink that is "almost" as good as Aurora, for about 30% more per ml. The scans look pretty grey compared to Aurora as well.

Hi Greg,

Great point! Now for my vague and ambiguous answer. Please keep in mind that I have only spent about 15 minutes with it so far.

I guess at least my initial response is that there seems to be some character to this ink that I have not experienced or don't recall ever having with the Aurora. Tactile feedback too is an area where I think Pelikan wins out over Aurora. With the Auroras lubrication I often lose a connection with the nib. Practically zero feedback from a smooth nib whereby I think (at least with the short time I've spent with it) with the Edelstein you can still feel a hint of what the nib is doing, the lubrication doesn't "cover up" the nib feedback. Did that make any sense? I plan on spending some additional time with it in the morning. Perhaps I'm just imagining things... YMMV

Thank you Greg for pointing that out!

Very Best Wishes,

Stephen

Is it very similar to their normal 4001 black?

Greetings,

Nope, not similar in many respects. It deffinately seems to be a totally different formulation. For one, there is this lubrication that Onyx has that their standard ink doesn't. If I recall correctly, their regular 4001 black is kinda dry also and Onyx seems to flow much freer. My plan is to sit down here in a little while and haul some of this other stuff (like Aurora and 4001) out and do some comparisons... Please have a little patience with me and I'll post some more stuff here as soon as I can get it all put together. Unfortunately, I have only a mere sample of Onyx to work with. A couple of the comparisons that I would like to see myself is how it compares to a few of the more intense Noodler's blacks, like HOD or OMB and at present, I don't believe I have any of them here...

Very Best Wishes & the Kindest Regards,

Stephen

Greetings,

Well I was able to spend more time using the Pelikan Onyx. Overall, I still like it quite a bit. I will say however, that it is not as intense as Aurora's Black. I've done a little bit of a comparison. In light of the questions concerning Pelikan's 4001 Black, I included it also in the comparison... Please see these pages below:

Ah, thanks for the information! It's good to hear it's really new, it would be a cheap ploy for them to just repackage their standard black and call it a luxury ink.

  • 7 months later...

Hi all,

I just wanted to add another positive opinion about this ink. While I agree that the Edelstein series on the whole is underwhelming, this black is fabulous - great shading, sumptuous pen feel, and (a quality I hadn't thought of judging an ink on previously) impressive longevity. I write with this ink using a F or M nib almost every day, and after 9 months I'm still only half way through my first bottle! I would buy this ink anyway (I'm still looking for a black I like more) but for those concerned about the price I think this may mitigate the value issue.

Cheers.

i bought a bottle from Pear Tree Pens, as they went out of business. It is a nice black, not as dark as Aurora, but gives a nice bit of shading on a broader, wetter nib. I like it and have it in a Pelikan m205 with an italic nib. Very nice.

I have this ink and have been using it for a while now. Even in F pointed nibs it flows very smooth and consistently. Another interesting thing I have noticed is: it is a "deep" color - it seems to be consisting of "layers" when writing with a broader nib. Just like the stone, I imagine.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
