Doodles From Various Fountain Pens (image Heavy!)

Recommended Posts

Not being much of a writer-for-the-sake-of-writing, I use pens (of different types) mostly for drawings, sketchings and quick note taking. It is only recently that I've begun looking for all my old fountain pens- I hadn't realized just how many of these I've amassed over the years.

These days I use only Parker Quink blue and black, because these are the most very easily obtained where I am (the Hero ink used be widely available as well but sadly I don't see them around anymore).

Top to bottom (and below right to left):

Pilot (vintage? unknown model number), Unknown pen (but I refer to it as Iridium Point as per marking on nib, using it as a dip pen now), Aurora (unknown model number), Hero 331, Parker Sonnet (the smoothest and wettest of the lot), Parker Urban (quite a horrible nib for such a heavy pen).

The doodles below are done on thin white paper, about 6x4 inches.

Your iridium pen is from a Muji store, either in ny city or Japan (it's like a chic Ikea there).

They are relatively cheap (15-20) and take the same cartridges as Lamy, I believe.

Hi lasttrain,

I got the unknown iridium point pen over 10 years ago, in the late 90s, in London. Because it was so long ago that I just can't remember where I got it from exactly. So there you are, a Muji outlet in London. Thanks for the identification, good job.

Good to know they have not changed the product line up in their fountain pens!

After thinking, I believe they take the rotring cartridges I use in my Artpen.

This is a fine demonstration of how much fun can be had with fountain pens. Thanks for posting your work and images of your pens.

Margana and Alvarez: Thanks.

All the scans on shown here are almost 1:1 to the original's size. All done on a pad of very thin white paper (you can see faint ghosts of the next page on each scan).

Here are another couple of examples of what hero 331 can do.

Hello! Thank you for sharing such a fun review! You are really quite talented, and I'd love to see more. Someone on FPN stated something about how boring blue ink is. Well, not when you're using it!

Cheers!

Your fox is my favorite character.

The last one gives itself to many visual images, funny to find what has been the general reaction. Quite unexpected!

I couldn't resist... this was the very first thing I thought when I saw that doodle... (excuse my crappy art skills)

EDIT: Just wanted to add that my additions were done with a Parker Vector using Bethge No. 5.

Your art style reminds me very much of the illustrator who created the artwork for the menus at "Mimi's Café" a chain of french café style restaurants in the states. I like it :)

Thanks for the comments on my meager drawing abilities... The first time I sketched it out I hadn't added the bottom of the shirt or the pants and there were more dollar bills in his hand which made it seem like.... well... y'know... ;)

There should be a thread in "Creative Expressions" with a "Complete this sketch" theme... that would be quite fun!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
