Diamine Emerald

This is a review of Diamine Emerald, a medium green that is perhaps (if anything) tending slightly more towards red than blue. I didn't think I wanted a green ink but then Diamine sent me some sample cartridges with an order that I placed several months ago and I instantly liked Emerald. So much so that I bought a bottle.

To be more precise, I like this ink a lot in my wet-writing Autopoint pen that came as part of a smoothing kit that I bought from Richard Binder. It was the first pen whose nib I smoothed and it writes very nicely. It's a wet-writing pen (my favourite kind!) but the flow can be somewhat uneven, which is not so good. For some reason there is a kind of synergy between that pen and this ink that I really enjoy. I keep meaning to try Diamine Emerald in one of my Pelikans, all of which are wet writers but with excellent flow control. However, I tend to be a one-ink-one-pen kind of guy, which is another way of saying that I'm too lazy to have a pen "rotation". When Pelikan finally comes out with a new M200 or M205 colour that I like, I suspect this will be the first ink in my new pen!

I'll post the screen shot in the next message because I just looked at the one I posted on screen and it looked too bright.

The difference is subtle, but that second version is closer to what I'm seeing on paper.

Very strange results. Whatever with I use the ink with [ dip pens, Waterman wet Ideal, Sheaffer Imperials..] , it always looks like a Vert Empire, slightly lighter. Which is why I got the ink first.

Lovely color :) Thanks for the review. If I hadn't just purchased another bottle of lierre sauvage, I'd be buying this one. As it is, it's now on my list :)

Thank you for the review. The color from the free cartridge that I got from Diamine does not look like your writing sample, but maybe that was because I was using it in a pen that wrote a bit dry. Now that I've seen your review, I'll try a cartridge again, this time with a wet nib.

  • 5 years later...

Your samples of the Emerald Green sure are different than what I experienced. Using a Pilot Metropolitan F, on Franklin-Chrisoph or cheap steno book paper, looked like it had tints of olive drab in it. Very dry, and dusty looking. It does dry very fast and my in my usually wet writing metro, it looked so dry writing, that I found myself putting extra pressure on the pen. Definately not an ink I'll be using any time soon. In my limited experience, this is the worst ink I've tried yet. I love the Diamine Sherwood Green though. A rich, vibrant green that writes wet. Just a few opinions from a noobe.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
