Montegrappa Science And Nature

In one of my previous posts I mentioned that I just completed the tribute to mankind trilogy set that Montegrappa produced between 1999 to 2002. The Science and Nature pen is limited to 1912 pens, was introduced in 1999 and was the first pen produced in the series so lets start with this one then I'll follow with the next two.

Packaging: 8.5/10

The box set is nice but certainly the least interesting of the three pens. The outer box is fairly large so it does take up a decent amount of space.

Appearance: 9.5/10

The pen is georgeous in person. I initially passed on this one and just bought the other two as I didn't really like how this pen looked in pictures. Boy was I wrong, I think this one is my favorite of the three! The first couple of pictures are of the cap. Montegrappa did such a wonderful job designing this pen. The celluloid and enamel work are top notch.

This design is my favorite part of the pen..........

And this is my least favorite part. As a matter of fact all three have this picture on the pen though this is the biggest one leaving me give less than perfect score for appearance.

NIB: 8.5/10

Not crazy about the NIB engraving, I think Montegrappa could have done a better job here. The performance is good, l'm going the have the NIB adjusted to fine from medium.

Filling System: 9.5/10

This is a piston filled pen which is great the only reason I wouldn't rate it higher is because I think the pen should hold a little more ink.

Cost Value: 9/10

At a $3200 retail price this is more of a relative rating as I consider these higher end Montegrappa's direct competitors to an Oscarson or Perchin. Its hard to justify any pen at these retail price's but it is a pretty good value compared to an Oscarson that retails for about 5k. I do like this pen and the others in this set better than what Oscarson and Perchin offer. Its a heavy pen but not nearly as heavy as a Perchin or Oscarson, plus its piston filled and the Perchin's and Oscarson's are not. IMO pens at these levels should be piston filled. My advice would be to try and get one of these used or discounted. I will say that if you fell like indulging yourself its well worth it.

Overall: 9/10

Its hard to give any pen a perfect score, I haven't seen a perfect one yet but this one is close a few minor (nit picky) things like the high price, packaging and NIB design hold this pen back from being a perfect score for me but other than that I highly recommend it! Here's a group shot of all three.

I know this is old thread ... I had the same pen for quite some time now but recently I was able to acquire the enigma cosmos. I like both designs, they are absolutely top notch (I own a couple of montblanc POAs, one Oscarson, and a couple more higher end similarly priced pens; but I would say this series of pens beat the rest).

I like the design of enigma better (maybe because it is a new acquisition) but I found the nature and science has a better balance in my hand. Capped, the nature and science is longer ; uncapped, they are the same size. I don't know why the enigma is a bit top heavy.

The hunt for human civilization is on ...

I remember doing the vitreous enamel work on these pens, 1912 including some in 18ct gold. There were some made for the Middle eastern market that we had to hand engrave a cloak to cover Adams nakedness (t (ultra rare?).

They were a lovely design and quite challenging to enamel.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
