Diamine Chocolate Brown

This is a handwritten review of Diamine Chocolate Brown, an ink that is saturated and free flowing, yet still manages to exhibit some shading.

This is currently my favourite brown ink - although I am tempted to try Raw Sienna after seeing your comparison thread...

What a clear and nice review. Thanks. It tells me some things I didn't know about it.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

nice concise professional scientific review. i've seen a few of yours now and they're top notch, even down to using the same pen for multiple products.(control group) thanks!

Raw sienna isn't very nice, its really light, even in my safari m, which is definatley a wet writer. This looks much nicer

Inked and Using:

Reform 1745 - Noodlers Black

Reform 1745 - Diamine Med. Blue

Reform P120 - Diamine Teal

Lamy Safari - Noodlers Black

Lots of Rotring Art Pens for Calligraphy - Diamine inks

Currently, Private Reserve Chocolat is my "go to" brown. But I think I may just order a bottle of Diamine Chocolate Brown, next time I stock up on ink.

Thanks for the nice review.

Nice review!

I recently got a bottle of this and am very glad I did. It's my new favorite brown.

I just added this in to my "I WANT!" list. Great review...thanks, desertsquid.

(I agree, looking at the color I can almost taste the chocolate too!)

My first (and only) brown. Very saturated indeed. Wonderful with a M 14k Studio!! I mixed it with some Diamine Orange Blaze to get a curry-ish color.

Thank you for your review and for your comparative review of brown inks!!

oh, i thought i had comment on this one, but missed it...

it's w/o a doubt my fav brown ink. i don't think there's a brown ink out there so true to the name (which is very odd for diamine, who's always naming inks that don't make sense. like: Umber :hmm1: ) this one is pure dark chocolate brown!!! your scan really captured the color, IMO!

thx, desertsquid!

Great shading! Nice brown, but I prefer browns with a little more reddish tint, such as Waterman Absolute Brown, Sailor Jentle Grenade, etc.

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
