Review: Noodler's piston-filler

Spot on review. I also purchased a couple of these pens at the show and I'm very pleased with the way they write. I wish these pens were widely available at the office supply chains because at $12, or whatever price they end up being, they are a very reasonable alternative for more people to use everyday instead of disposable ball point and gel pens. I think they could be marketed as an environmental green alternative with a wonderful selection of ink colors, though I suppose some of us would have trouble with only one pen, maybe defeating the green idea.

The only problem I had was that I bought a red piston-filler and some Ottoman Rose to go with it. Very excited to try out my new red pen and red ink when I got home. However, when I opened the box I found I was given a bottle of Ottoman Azure by mistake. I also bought La Coleuer Royal so I ended up with two blues (I prefer La Coleuer Royal). Nathan - any help on this? I had to fill the Noodler pen with Binder Burgandy instead (a great color as well but not exactly what I had planned).

Overall, a wonderful experience for my first pen show.

Thanks.

That looks exactly like my Dollar demonstrator. So my take now is that some of the Noodler's pens are made in India, some in Pakistan.

Based on the image of the Dollar I just looked at, I totally agree.

ditto, but my Dollar is a great pen. Also the clip looks different/heavier than the Dollar.

While I agree it is based on the Dollar, I'm not certain that it is a Dollar with a little logo sticker on the top. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Dollar pen that Nathan tweaked in some way or another. I imagine Nathan would admit it if it were a Dollar pen. I suppose one of us could contact him (if we care).

I was working the door at the bar I work at this evening and noticed a gentleman writing with a Parker 51 at a table near me. Being unable to resist I asked him about his pen and showed off my demonstrator and the $20 Noodler's sac filler I had gotten at the show. He said it looked just like the Dollar pen but with a different cap/clip. So it would seem that Nathan had at least some modification cosmetically done, I would think that the internal bits may be something special as well.

Another thing. I got two clear demonstrators at the show. The slit in one nib looks like a regular nib, goes down about half way or so. The other nib has a very long slit and I was encouraged by Nathan to try both out. With a little fiddling and "breaking in" there is a promise of a good flex to these deeply slitted nibs.

I agree with Lloyd that Nathan must have tweaked these pens a bit further than we think upon initial inspection.

Would the Triumph-nibbed squeeze filler be anything like the pen shown on the Noodler's site with #41 Brown?

Not just anything like it...it IS it.

That is the one I have only it has a different nib. Fine, but very wet, Steel nib with Noodler's Ink Co. stamped on it.

I wonder if there will be some at the Raleigh Pen Show in two weeks??

Last year, Chuck Swisher bought out Nathan's remaining Boston show stock of VMail/Dark Matter inks and offered it in Raleigh. I can only hope something like that happens with these pens because I'll be there Friday and Saturday. :)

ETA: I think the nib, jewel, and clip look to be non-Dollar sourced on the demo pen. I'd guess it's a Dollar body with a hard rubber feed and a #2 nib, based on the rest of the line.

At least my demo's feed isn't hard rubber (according to Nathan).

Well, he'd be the source to believe! ;)

I won't be buying a demo model, then. I like my Dollars, but I think I have enough of them (3 -- two demo and one grey).

Warning on the demo: Do not drop it onto asphault. Mine slipped off of my shirt placket while getting gas and caused a crack in the cap and a crack in the mechanism region of it. It seems to still be 100% functional but the attractiveness of my BSB filled demo is gone (it was starting to stain a bit, too). So, after making the nib nice and super-buttery, I emptied it and put it into the "to be given away" pile.

Sorry to hear about the tragedy. If you really are going to "give it away," could I request you PIF it to me? I would gladly pay postage and would not be the least bit offended to be able to evaluate an "old broken pen." Truth be told, it will probably convince me to buy a few for myself (and to give away) later! So you would actually be stimulating the economy and speeding our national recovery. How patriotic. PM me if you still have it and feel like sharing.

If I decide to PIF, I'll do so. However, the cracks are (currently) superficial. So, it is still being used for BSB.

I compared it to one of smedon's Dollar demos and there are definite differences: the nib, feed, and piston appear the same (Nathan told me the piston was the same) but the plastic shell feels a little (very little) more substantial in the Noodlers, the Noodlers clip is definitely stronger, and Nathan's can be taken apart for cleaning/repairing by turning the piston beyond the end. However, smedon's appear to be worth their cost. (mine arrived fractured but smedon is sending me a replacement)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
