Montblanc Racing Green

Hello,

This Post is to support an undertaking initiated by another FPN member, 'professionaldiletante' to reproduce the discontinued Montblanc 'Racing Green', (MBRG). OP_here

So this is not an Ink Review, rather the intention is to provide a uniform starting point (online) where it can be viewed, and mixers without their own cache of MBRG can get an idea of how the ink looks albeit on the monitor - not on the page. (OK OK - there is some hubris on my part, thinking that I can produce 'definitive' scans, but this is a starting point - not an end-point.)

There are restrictions as to the level of detail that can be included in a Post due to bandwidth concerns and the need to share bandwidth with image intensive portions of FPN, such as the Market Place where Sellers post images and make money, as opposed to Ink & Pen Reviews where FPNers donate their time, materials and effort for the common weal, rather than personal profit. Such is the environment, so let's make the best use of it.

I suppose that not including images within your Post, but including only a link to the images may well keep this Thread lean and conserve bandwidth for other bits of FPN.

So here we go: the first sample of MBRG. Swabs and a written sample. I found that for mixing, it is useful to show the ink in various densities, from 3 times a single swab to a very pale density. As the ink is the same, the colour should be the same, with only the density (luminosity) changing. I found the dilutions to be of great use to view a dark complex ink.

To my eyes, I see MBRG as essentially a dark Green-Brown. I do not see a Green-Black, or a Green-Grey-Black.

Please chime-in with other descriptions of this colour.

I did a rudimentary mix, using 3 parts of Private Reserve 'Shoreline Gold' (my favourite 'dirty yellow') and 1 part of Waterman 'Florida Blue'. The Green seemed to be OK for a fast & dirty starting point, but it needed Brown notes, but I only have one Brown - the Pilot 'yama-guri', which missed by a mile. Yikers!!

If you want to see other scans of the MBRG, please let me know.

ByeBye

Sandy1

EDIT: There was some curiosity about the difference in image quality between an inserted image, and a link to the original image. So, here's the link to the image below: Link_to_OP_Scan

Here is a close-up of the strange on-off shading, from the word 'feathering' on the last row of the primary sample : Shading_Link

Beautiful demo. How did you take that closeup of the shading?

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

Thanks.

I don't have a digi-cam, so all my stuff is from an Epson V600 scanner.

  • I do a Preview scan of the original, then from the Preview, I select the portion of the image I want to work with.
  • I do a Zoom that lets me 'crop' down to the minimum image that I want to show.
  • I go back to the scanner control panel, then set the resolution to 1200 dpi. (Scale is still 100%.)
  • Scan, then upload to Photobucket; finally just paste the 'Direct Link' into the FPN 'Insert Link' dialogue box.

File info from Photobucket:: File Size: 253 kb - 787 x 635: which is the same as the original file data - Photobucket doesn't compromise posted images, though a direct Post (insert image - not link) into FPN may well generate a more-compromised image. Hmm - let's see if I can still edit the OP to include a link to the original image.

I hope this answers your question. If not maybe I can try again.

Bye,

Hey sandy1, have you tried Shaeffer Kings Gold for a dirty yellow? On the brown maybe Grand Canyon CD. Good luck on your quest to replicate the famed MBRG.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
