Every now and again I go back and try to improve the penshops.info site. There are still too few entries to be as useful as I would like, but it has bothered me since I first put the site up that the map wasn't the first thing visible. I also didn't care for the page's overall design, which was a free template downloaded from somewhere. I don't think it was terrible, but I wanted to make it spiffier.

So over the last few days I devoted some of my time to rebuilding the site. I hope the change meets with people's approval and I'd like to know what you think and why.

For those of you who are not familiar with http://www.penshops.info/ there is more information at the pinned thread in Market Watch. Basically, the site is a directory for pen shop locations, information, reviews, ratings and comments. It was built in response to the perennial question from new or traveling FPN members: "where can I find a pen shop?" Since these threads come up repeatedly I thought it would be a good idea to have a single place for this kind of information.

Any suggestions, comments, criticism, insults or praise? Let me know. I'd like to make http://www.penshops.info/ a really great resource for FPNers (and everyone else, too).

It looks great Splicer.

I have an update for the Bay Area.

There is a bookstore called 'Read' in Danville that now carries fine pens including Aurora, Montegrappa, Pelikan, and a few others.

The VIP Luggage in Stoneridge mall picked up MontBlanc after the MB store went belly up.

In the directory, the numbers in parentheses next to place names appear to be ID numbers. If you're going to have numbers at all, it should be the number of shops in that location.

The new version is clearer and easier to use.

...but when I added a store I noticed the list of inks lacks Caran d'Ache and Rohrer & Klingner!

When I just went to add a shop I couldn't get it to show multiple brands sold, could only select one.

Hmmm.. It works from here. Did you try holding down the shift key or the control key (command key on mac) while clicking the other selections? If that doesn't work, PM me and let me know what browser and operating system you're using so I can try to test it using your same configuration.

Thanks! Added both.

And I feel really stupid about missing Caran d'Ache inks since I actually have some!

THanks! That used to count correctly, so I just removed the numbers until I find a way to fix it.

Update to this: you can now use Facebook Connect for your login account on penshops.info. So if you're on Facebook you won't have to create a new account. It also means that when you add a pen shop or comment on an existing one you can let all your Facebook friends know about it. Yay!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
