I waited longer than most FP enthusiasts to try this ink. I don't know why really as dusky purples are some of my favorite inks. Let me tell you this ink does not disappoint. It is gorgeous and quite well behaved.

The Details:

* I'd describe this color as a dusky mauve. In a very wet writer and when used on a very absorbent paper, it can be quite deep and dark. It can even look black at times.

* It does not bleed through or feather. I find it quite tolerant of most papers, even those of poor quality.

* The flow and lubrication are excellent. It really makes for a smooth writing experience.

* The drying time is a little longer than I expected at 13 seconds, but I was using a very wet writer and these note card do have longer drying times. Still, I expected it to be faster.

* The shading is good, but not as pronounced as some other dusky purples I have (namely Diamine Amazing Amethyst).

* Now for the most surprising thing about this ink... THE WATER RESISTANCE IS EXCELLENT!!! In a water droplet test (drop water on the page, leave to sit for a couple minutes, soak the water up with a paper towel) this ink barely lost any color and remained perfectly legible! More extensive tests are needed, but I am very happy with these findings!!

I agree, it's one of the most water resistant non-permanent inks that I have tested (including various inks from Waterman, PR, R&K, Pelikan and Diamine). In fact this and Lie de Thé survived the best. It was a bit surprising that the Herbins had the most water resistance - I'd have imagined the winner to be Private Reserve. People always talk about how watery Herbin inks are.

You probably didn't wait as long as me to try this (or any other) Herbin ink. I agree with your positive comments and am surprised and delighted by its water resistance. This has become my favorite (non-blue) ink, at least for this month. . I've been very happy with all the Herbin inks I've used.

Thanks for the review, Dizzypen. This is an ink that I've just started using as well. I can't get over how great the flow is.

Regarding the shading, have you noticed that after laying down a character, what starts out as fairly pronounced shading actually seems to fade away over the course of twenty seconds or so? Am I crazy?

This is one of my favorites! I use it all the time. I hadn't done a waterproofness test myself, I'm happy to hear it holds up so well. Admittedly, the non-permanence of Herbin inks is one of the only real drawbacks, but clearly each ink performs differently. Thanks for this review. Yet another reason it's one of my top sellers!

This ink is the one I'm currently using in my finicky fined-nibbed Visconti Opera and I've found that it performs exceptionally well. I'm looking forward to trying it in a wetter writer to experience the deeper version of the color. The water resistance is an unexpected plus--thanks for testing.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

I didn't like this ink at first, but since I'm currently leaning towards less saturated inks I am quite liking this one. My Lamy 2000 also gets along with it. I'm glad I gave it a second chance. Thanks for the informative review.

This ink is stunning. I carry 3 pens and it's loaded into 2 of them.

Is this going to be one that's going to have a bigger bottle version?

My only complaint is that bottle design. It's not big nib friendly :(

I've waited quite a while myself. I'm going to place an order for this ink, and Violette Pensee.

Thanks for your nice review, and for reporting on the water resistance. I made this my wintertime purple this year. I was surprised at how pretty the color is. The photos on the computer screen don't show it off well.

May you have pens you enjoy, with plenty of paper and ink. :)

Please use only my FPN name "Gran" in your posts. Thanks very much!

thank you for the review. How does this ink compare to Diamines amazing amethyst or damson? I am looking for a slightly darker and/or redder ink than amazing amethyst. Any suggestions? thanks

Here is a comparison between Amazing Amethyst and Damson. Poussiere de Lune is incredibly similar to Damson with Damson being a bit darker.

  • 1 year later...

Just got a bottle of this, on one side of a leather correspondence holder made by Herbin, and yes I am a fan of it as well.

Thank you for this excellent review.

Like other readers, I too was surprised by the good water resistance of this ink.

It became quickly one of my go-to inks as it behaves very well, has good flow, the right degree of saturation and is very pleasing to the eye.

Judging from the comments here and the fact hat it was one of the first Herbin inks to be available in 100 ml bottle, it seems to be deservedly popular too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
