Agh! That scan is too yellow! I'll post another in a couple minutes. Until then, imagine it a teeny bit more red.

These scans always do worst with the actual writing, so look to the denser areas to get the most accurate color. Of course, accuracy is pretty hard to get in all ink reviews, and especially with such a subtle color like this. So: good luck! I did my best!

A very nice color, very subdued and gentle. The Marksman (never heard of the brand, though if it is from the first result when googling "marksman pen", it must be a very old model) pen has an odd flow, but it let me see how the ink would react to various degrees of wet writers (as seen in the top right corner). I haven't created a satisfying method for smear tests, I feel like my downstroke doesn't give an accurate reflection of in-use dry time. This ink dries quickly, I've not had any problems with smudging. I didn't do a water test, but it's J. Herbin, so don't sign any checks to known frauds with it. This is my second Herbin brown (also have Lie de The) and based on my enjoyment of these two I'll probably get Cafe des Iles (sp?) at some point as well.

Conclusion:

A very nice ink, soothing in a way, quiet. Very nice for drawing and more pressure in almost any pen will result in a slightly bolded word, if you like emphasis in your writing. I'm not going to give it a numeral score given my limited contact, but at this point it's high.

Hmm. Now it's a bit too red. Imagine it a little more grey, in between the two scans. Let's just say a grey-brown, very neutral. Elusive!

Thanks for the review. This ink is a verrrry popular seller for me. It's easy on the eyes, writes nicely, performs well, and is a pleasure to use. When I first started selling J. Herbin, this ink was the first one to clear off my shelves, actually so quickly I had to up the level of inventory I carry for it to keep up with the demand. Plenty of FPN members here love this ink, so I'm sure you'll hear from plenty of them.

I appreciate the review and the two scans. I have a sample of this and I'm going to load that sample in the next available pen. Thanks!

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

Thank you for this review!

...It's easy on the eyes...

Yes that was my first impression, too, it is surprisingly legible and easy on the yes for a non-saturated colour.

Thanks Will, great review, probably another J. Herbin ink I will order soon. If you like gray-purples and the subdued nature of this ink, let me recommend Herbin Poussiere de Lune. It leans more toward burgundy, but there's a hint of purple and gray. I find it to be a soothing ink to use and the performance is great. Then a green ink to round out this theme would be Vert Empire....but I won't say anything else because you may end up buying the Herbin 30-ink pack that Brian offers!!

maybe i need to find the right nib that would make the color come alive... as long as it doesn't jump up and bite!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
