Someone from MB service slipped this in with my pen.

The mythical BBB and OF did exist! Eric tells no lies. Never doubted him for a second. :D

I'm pretty sure I have an OF in an 80's #146...and I do have a BBB or two.. :bunny01:

Cool nib catalogue Jeen, any chance you could scan that and email it me? Or better yet...send it to Niksch and maybe he can post it on his server/web site for download, like the Gabay article?? :eureka:

K = Kugel or ball

so it's a "ballpoint" fine nib

What would one do with such a point (the "K")? Was it a manifolding nib?

Kind regards,

I'm not sure if they were/are manifold nibs, but because of the ball shape, they can write at many different angles, and I think of them as a utility nib.

This is a really awesome sort-of-artifact! It's not all that odd that Montblanc still has things like this floating around their service centers, but I'm a bit surprised nonetheless. Thanks for sharing, Jeen!

Hi Kamiyashi. Still own that Verne?

Notice that XF, F, and M are roundish. I'm guessing that's because stubbing the finer nibs wouldn't

give that much line variation anyway and could create an digging edge with the narrower tips. In any case I'm glad MB offers round and stubbish nib options.

You're welcome Reprieve.

Now who can translate the bottom right of the chart for us?

Draufsicht auf die federspitze= view of the nib tip

Eric, have you written with one? Is it like broad with a round tip?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
