Very nice photos, Alvaro. Thanks for sharing them from Barcelona. You have also made a fantastic site in estilograficas.net. I knew it by chance and have seen that you have there lots of information. Well done!

Very nicely watermarked images.

Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right

HELLO ALVARO

"EN LA SOMBRA" YOU SAY, EH? IN ENGLISH, I THINK WE'D SAY YOU'VE GOT IT "MADE IN THE SHADE". ANYWAY, VERY COOL STORE, AND VERY INTERESTING REVIEW. I WENT TO HIGHSCHOOL IN BARCELONA FOR A WHILE (1967-'68) AND LATER SPENT SOME TIME AT THE ESCUELA MASSANA ('69-'70). I USED TO BUY ANTIQUE FOUNTAIN PENS AT A TINY SHOP ON CALLE FERNANDO; SORT OF BETWEEN THE AYUNTAMENTO PLAZA AND VIA LAETANA. I WONDER IF IT'S STILL THERE...

I HOPE YOU'LL KEEP WRITING

One free advice, get personel who can speak english. I visited the store mid september this year and the sales lady there couldn't speak a single word of english. As you can guess I didn't purchase the four pens I intended and ordered them online. Not to be rude or anything, but pen stores are so rare these days that people travel to visit one, so do your company a favor and get workers who can speak english.

I visited your wonderful shop in October 2008. It is a real Aladdin's cave for fountain pen enthusiasts like me, and I will surely call again when I re-visit Barcelona in the future. There was a lovely and very helpful lady at the sales desk. She did not speak any English, and my Spanish is, unfortunately, limited to just a few words. Still, perseverance paid off and I managed to leave with one excellent pen. This customer is very happy.

I'M SURPRISED TO HEAR ANYONE STILL SPEAKS SPANISH IN BARCELONA

It seems clear to me that Álvaro is not the owner of the store, Discordianist. He is sharing some photos of a review of the store that he did on his website dedicated to fountain pens.

It is another issue whether one should begrudge store clerks for not speaking English in a city with two official languages, neither of which is English! :hmm1:

As I said I didn't want to be rude or anything.. it simply stuns me that I can find people from Europe who a) don't speak English B) speak only two languages. I speak three fluently and fourth some what usably. And not one of them is Spanish or Catalonia. Maybe she would have spoken french, but I studied it over two decades ago and haven't used since..

Not sure whether we're referring to the same lady, but she did not speak French or Italian either. I tried those languages to no avail. She could speak Spanish (Castillian) or Catalan. Finally had to resort to single Spanish words and lots of gesticulation, but I got there in the end.

That is pretty amazing for a store salesperson in a store like that in a big city like Barcelona to not speak anything but Spanish. One viable solution to this language problem is to go over to a nearby Internet cafe, use BabelFish or some other translator website to translate a number of sentences that you can think of, as well as key words/concepts, write them down, and then return to the store. If you get somewhere but not far enough, you can then have the person write down what they're saying and you can go back to the Internet cafe to translate it as well as a response back.

I can't be absolutely sure, but I don't think that there is any internet cafe near or even in that upscale city area :) Maybe there is, I don't know. And if you wouldn't be so upset (as I was) you could go out and try to get some locals to operate as a interpreter. And perhaps that sales person was a single case, maybe not. I was upset and indeed shopped elsewhere (online) but my trip to barcelona seemed lacking.. Thankfully Gaudi made it for me in the end.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
