Sailor blue

I read Marina's review of Sailor blue-black and decided to pick up a bottle. While I was at Pam's store, I bought a bottle of the standard blue as well. Here is a mini review and comparison of the Sailor blue with some of my other blue inks.

I used a dip pen and 'Borden & Riley 108 lb bleedproof paper for pens' from the local art supply store. The ink performs beautifully on paper with nice flow and quick drying times. The color is a bit muted compared to some of the more saturated inks I have, but I like the look.

I also did a water test.

This is how it looked after 30 minutes in the water. Not waterproof, but both inks are still ledgable.

I loaded a burgundy Sailor 1911 with fine 21k nib with the blue-black. I really like this combination. I've already talked to Pam about adding the other Sailor colors to my collection. I can't wait till she gets them back in stock. Thanks for looking.

Great job, Larry! You're quick, decisive and effective B) !

I like the look of Sailor Blue, too. That's a really useful comparison to other popular blue inks. I also appreciate your water test with the interesting results.

That blue looks very nice Larry. Now I have to buy that one! Someday...

I think Sailor ink performs really well and would love to have some more colors. If anybody wants to do a Sailor Swap and wants to try my Blue-Black, I'd be happy to send some out for another color.

Thanks for doing that review!!

Thanks for that, Larry.

Good as your soak test is, it would have been nice to have a control or two in there. Something with known Excellent or "Eternal" water resistant characteristics, like Noodler's Tahitian Pearl or Aircorp Blue-Black.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I would love to see some examples of the other Sailor colors if anyone has them. I much prefer seeing a handwritten scan on this board than a color swatch on a web site.

I appreciate these reviews, Larry and M4rin4 (whose review brought me here). M4rin4, if you're still around, your handwriting is amazing!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
