Question - bought Lamy 2000

First I would like to say thank you to everyone on the board. From all the useful information posted I decided to buy the Lamy 2000 fountain pen with EF nib through an online vendor.

When I examined the pen there was tiny amounts of ink on the nib. It looks like this pen was possibly tested by another customer. Is it standard practice to sell fountain pen that have been used as new? Thanks for any help.

It's possible that the ink on the nib was left after the pen was tested at the factory -- I don't know whether Lamy tests its pens before shipment.

It's also possible that the pen was tested by the seller -- if you buy a pen from me, I test and adjust it as necessary to make it write well. I try to clean the ink out so your pen is "virgin-like," but I'm willing to bet that sometimes I don't get it all.

And it's also possible that the pen was sold to someone who tried it, found it not to his or her taste, and sent it back for a refund.

I know that we are all different, but I don't mind ink on the nib of a new pen. I am more interested in how well the pen writes on good paper, such as Clairefontaine. Once I received a new pen with no nib, but I did not order from that retailer again. I hasten to add that the seller was not Richard, for whom I have great respect.

I bought Kurts Lamy 2000 with the Broad nib and I was shocked!!!

Everyone said that the Safari has one of the smoothest nibs around. HA, I thought they were insane, how can a steel nib be buttery smooth as a gold nib. Well I bought a yellow one and it is one of the smoothest writers I have.

Well people said the same about the Lamy 2000, I thought it was all hype!! Well again, they were right. This is one of the smoothest pens around!!!

I never cared for the LAMY styles but boy they sure write nice!!!

Hi,

Lamy does test their pens before shipment. They also tested my 2000 before returning it from a nib swap. :)

I think they use Lamy Blue-Black (I'm pretty sure Dillon posted this somewhere) so if it was a Blue-Black ink, there's a larger chance it was factory tested.

Hi,

I believe they use blue, all the new Lamy 2000 pens I have seen have a bit of the ink in them.

I hope the DON'T use Lamy Blue-Black for testing, as that is ferro-gallic.

My new Lamy 2000 (from pengallery, $77, Boxing Day sales) also had some traces of ink. I first thought, it was a trial pen in their shop. But the factory trial is not really reliable, as my EF nib won't write properly without pressure. I will send it to Lamy Germany for the free repair/exchange they offered me.

For Europeans, here is their service center address:

I caught the same sale and bought a fine nibbed Lamy 2000.

I wasn't happy with the nib at all, as it was very scratchy and wouldn't write without some pressure. I have recently received it back from a nib exchange for a medium.

Needless to say, I'm still not satified. I'm thinking about selling it or trying a oblique nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
