Los Angeles Area Pen Brokers

Need a little help here! I have a few pens that I'd like to sell. I can't go the ebay route (see my earlier post)--and I'd really like the potential buyer(s) to be able to actually see & test the pens before purchasing them. I have all the original paperwork, boxes, & receipts except for one pen that was a gift. Should I go to a pen broker & have them sell the pens? Would I receive a fair price? If so, can someone recommend one in the Los Angeles area?

OR

Should I try to sell them myself to someone locally?

Also, how do I go about determining the going price/fair price for the pens? Any advice would be most appreciated.

The pens are:

ST Dupont Pharaoh FP & BP (both very gently used)

ST Dupont Andalusia FP (gently used)

Jules Verne FP (unsealed box but never inked--at least I don't ever recall writing with it; too big for my hand)

Hi Platinumuser.

I thought you were a Dupont Fan? I can't believe you are going to give up those Duponts LEs. The Pharaoh in particular is almost impossible to get now. I would love to get my hands on those but unfortunately I am sure they will be out of my budget. I guess you have successfully broken out of ST Dupont obsession...there might be hope for me yet!

Good luck with your sale.

Regards,

Neil

Hi Neil,

I am a Dupont fan . . . I used the Pharoah & Andalusia for a short time and then they just seemed too flashy, beautiful but flashy! So they just sit in the display case like neglected orphan kids. I do, however, keep my Black Orpheo Placed Metal FP with me at all times. That's the one that I will never give up! (I gave the Vertigo want-to-be to a colleague who insists that it's authentic). If I ever get around to selling the pens, I'd like to try some of the Pelikan, Waterman, and Parker FPs.

Are you a Dupont fan? There doesn't seem to be too many of us on this network.

An Andalusia? You have an Andalusia? Damn, I wish I wasn't so poor, otherwise I'd make you an offer! :crybaby:

The Andalusia is stunning. I'm not sure when it came out but my receipt reflects that I bought it in July of 2004. Not sure if I overpaid, but I recall getting caught up in the excitement of finding one. I paid $925 for it.

Thanks for your words of encouragement.

Oh, and congratulations on your new(?) business.

Hi Annette.

Yes I can see where they would be too flashy for the office but they are gorgeous. My favourite is my Black Placed Metal as well but mine is a medium nib and my writing looks horrible with a medium. I am awaiting an EF nib for it from the new Dupont Distributor, Lotus MJXY. My Extra Large Black with Palladium accents is an EF nib and it writes divine so it is the one I currently use most.

I have a couple Watermans but the EF nibs are no where near as smooth as the Duponts so they do not get much use.

I agree that there doesn't seem to be that much Dupont fans around but that might be a good thing.

If the Pharaoh FP is not part of a set with the BP, please let me know the price when you come up with one.

Regards,

Neil

Platinumuser,

Thank you. LOL. Actually, it's not up and running yet. It is a work-in-progress. It is more of an idea in my head right now, but one day it will be a reality! :D

Good luck on selling your Duponts!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
