Montblanc Starwalker 100 Years Diamond Fountain Pen

Around two years ago I read about the excentric Montblanc diamond that the company introduced in the many products. Including the 100 years anniversary fountain and ballpoint pens.

After a long time saving and looking, I accidently came across one Starwalker Diamond fountain pen yesterday. Spending quite some time wandering about this marvellous piece of art, I decided to buy it. After all, what are the chances that I will find one nearby me again?

That question kept wandering in my head since I finally have it in possession. It clearly isn't a limited edition, but could it perhaps be a limited series? I suppose they only have produced in 2006, the year of their 100th anniversary. But how many are there actually on the market?

And then the crown figuratively and literally on top of the pen, the Montblanc diamond itself! I could spend hours looking at its beauty and its representation of one of the finest writing instruments craftsmen. This gem is quite symbolic. And it floats like magic in its transparent dome, enabling you to enjoy it from all sides.

I got quite curious about its size and weight (carat), but couldn’t find anything about these. Sure, I have read that the Montblanc diamond has 43 facets, features Wesselton colour and is of VS/SI quality.

But I can't find anything about it’s size and weight. Are there different sizes for the different products (watches, eyewear, jewellery, pens, etc.) or are they all the same? And what is the carat of the ones in the fountain pens?

Can anyone tell me something about the numbers of produced Starwalker 100 years anniversary fountain pen; and about the carat of the Montblanc diamond in these pens?

Grt,

M

Hi there and congratulations on your beautiful purchase :)

It was really funny reading your post because I was in the same exact situation exactly around a year ago in Beirut airport when I found this pen, the Montblanc Starwalker 100 Years Anniversary Special Edition and thought to myself likewise that I should get it because you never know if you would ever be able to find it again..

Well.. the thing with MBs.. they are already criticized that their Limited Edition pens are being manufactured at great numbers, i.e. regular limited editions 4,810 pieces and 888 pieces of the more expensive version of the same LE. I am assuming that a Special Edition (SE) would have been produced in even larger quantities ?

In regards to the solitaire carat weight, i have a feeling that it looks bigger than it really is in the magnified capsule heheh.. but its nice because people who have regular Starwalkers eventually notice that yours is different and they always ask to hold it and check it out :)

I guess the thing with this pen is that it isn't special as of now (there are a dozen lying around our malls here in Amman, and probably many other places in the world) BUT since it has only been produced in 2006 with time their numbers will dwindle unlike normal editions and eventually I am guessing some time over the next 5 years it will start being appreciated for what it is.. :) give it a few years hehe

Thank you Pravda, I really appreciate this pen and I like it a lot!

About the limited editions, I didn’t came across any with 4,810 pieces. That’s quite a lot. But I concur with you that the Special Edition has probably been made in large quantities. I just wish Montblanc isn’t so vague about the quantities, so we know how many there were produced.

I mean, with my Omega James Bond Watches, I know there were 10,007 made of each. That is what they call a Limited Series. Compared with their Limited Editions it’s quite a bunch, but they are clear about the quantity.

oh, I forgot to clarify that I have the centenary Starwalker Special Edition, not the more exclusive centenary Starwalker 100 or 1906, which are limited respectably at 100 and 1906 pieces. (About the last I am not 100% sure).

Just found out that the Montblanc Urban Walker Anniversary Edition Cufflinks consists of 2 Montblanc diamonds on each cufflink. They are "0,22 carat per pair".

But I am not sure what Montblanc means with pair; a pair of 2 cufflinks, or that they refer to the 2 Montblanc diamonds on each cufflink as a pair. The last one would make a total of 0,44 carat, when wearing a cufflink on both your left and right hand.

So, still no conclusion on the carat in the centenary Starwalker Special Edition fountain pen…

Anyone more “intel” about the quantities and carat?

M

Hey again Marnixmoed,

What I meant to say is that the MB limited editions are produced that for each patron of the art or writer they would produce 4,810 pens and an additional 888 pens of the same but usually solid gold instead of plated for the same LE. Noted, thats quite a large number already and that is why you can usually buy them for a couple of grand instead of them being valued at much more.. The special editions are plentifully produced throughout the year of their marking and I doubt, unfortunately, that we'll come to know exactly how much..

I am actually thinking about buying my first LE, the Friedrich II The Great fountain pen which i have found and the reason I read here is to see if it is really worth it or not..

Its actually interesting how certain companies define limited editions, note that others such as Audemars Piguet in their Royal Oak Offshore watch collection limit their watches usually from 25-250 tops for some series and others are set at 2,000 etc. Patek Philippe watches are worse, even regular editions are hard to come by, producing 10 watches a year tops from each model line.. their limited editions are under 5!

Dear Pravda,

thank you for your reply.

Ah, now I see the 4,810 limited edition. I have seen them before, but never paid too much attention to them. Some where too decorated to my taste. I like to sober, yet sophisticated modern lines in the Starwalker. It fits my (relative) young age better in my opinion.

How come you have chosen for this specific pen?

And with my little example of Omega I partially tried to illustrate that indeed the term "limited edition" is quite relative. And indeed, some models of watchbrands are produced in such small quantities per year, that you could almost count them limited editions too. Almost...

Omega saw this and made a clear distinction between their limited series (large amount but limited in production), limited editions (called specialities, limited like Audemars Piquet) and special editions (unique variaties).

Just crossing my fingers that someone might enlightend us with the numbers of the Starwalker special edition and it's diamonds carat...

m

Darius, was it not limited to production only in the year of 2006, this is what I was informed by the MB boutique my wife purchased mine from.

Best wishes.

If you consider the writer's series as a limited edition( which it is) then the number of pens goes up to 13,000 or more per edition.

That's right. The production of the resin model was limited to 2006, which means, they kept producing them as long as they were selling them. By not limited I meant not limited to a number of pieces produced.

hi Darius, so does it mean that 2006 of this pen will be manufactured if it sells on that year?

No. It means that the pen was continued to be produced during the year 2006, when MB were celebrating their 100th year anniversary. There is no limit to how many pens were produced.

I spoke to the manager of my local MB boutique in chelsea and they informed me that these were solely produced in 2006. Thy ceased production and now it is a discontinued model. They have one left in europe, some retailers still have some some ball point versions.

Best wishes.

I rememebr that Ms. Oprah Winfrey had a special dinner party to honor Sidney Poitier with a few invited guests from her audience. She agve each attendee a Starwalker 100 anniversary edition as a rememberance. I have to assume it was properly engraved to signify it's origin. Anyone ever see one of these?

I do know if the Dutch care much about the Bling, but a few months ago I found a couple of Dutch retailers who still sold the unlimited diamond version. If you're still interested, you can try there. Or on eBay perhaps, now and then one shows up occasionally.

I have one of these MB 100 anniversary fountain pens I purchased off an auction site. Has box etc. I like the look and the feel of the pen. However it railroads regular. Wonder if the nib is out of alignment or what could be going on with it. I’m kinda new to fountain pens and live off the beaten path so don’t have access to a MB shop. Welcome feedback on things to try to solve the railroading.

plus be careful buying used. This on has an engraving on the clip that was not disclosed prior to purchase. Only when it arrived did I see the initials on the clip. Might have bought it anyway, but I would have been nice to know.

Congratulations on your new pen! It is a real beauty. I find myself gazing at the diamond, lost in thought, quite often. It is one of the most prized pens in my collection, because it was gifted to me by my best friend on the summit of Mont Blanc, when we climbed the mountain in 2017.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
