I wanted to make a plug for an antique store in Saugatuck just off of I-196 (the Blue Star Highway exit) that I stopped at on my way back out to Iowa on Monday. I'm not affiliated, and don't stand to gain anything from making this post...but you could!

 

It's called the Blue Star Antique Pavilion, or something of that nature. There's one seller there in particular who's got a really nice stash of stuff there, and the prices are fairly reasonable. Here's what I remember.

  • Small handful of Sheaffer Snorkels
  • 4 or 5 Sheaffer Balances (a few Carmine, but no OS)
  • 6 or 8 Parker 21s (both clip variants, and many look like they're NOS)
  • 6 or 7 Parker 51s (mostly aerometrics) - Some decent nib variety too (I noticed one that was a broad - maybe a stub)
  • Streamlined Duofold Sr. that was beautiful - black and pearl ($215 - might be a little high, but it's beautiful)
  • Sheaffer Flat-Top (black, the big one, with a HUGE nib in great shape)
  • A couple of other things - Can't remember 'em all)

The Snorks were, if I remember correctly, in the $40-50 range. The 21s were in the $30-35 range, and the 51s were in the $70 range. I'm pretty sure that none of 'em were restored, but all were in very nice condition from a cosmetic perspective.

 

Might be worth a look!

Actually, I did. I picked up a navy blue old-style Vanishing Point with a medium nib. Nearly brand-new!

 

Henri, I can't recall an email address or a web address. I'd suggest that you Google it and see what comes up. With the store being the size that it is (it's big), I'd imagine that they've got some sort of web presence.

 

Ah...one more detail that I remembered after looking around at Isaacson's website. One of the 51s was a dove grey with the jeweler's band cap. Very nice! I should have picked it up, as I've been looking for a jeweler's band cap for a while now.

Been there with my mum. Nice looking pens but a bit pricey considering they are un-restored, (don't use book prices unless your pens are restored and in perfect condition). There's a maroon Vac set for some crazy price.

 

I prefer to buy pens from idiots who don't know what they have- got two different Esterbrooks for $14.00 that way.

I'd rather spend my money on pens instead of shoes and handbags.

I agree with you for the most part, but if I'm not mistaken, that Vac set was a bit nicer than the average Vac. Granted, still very high, but in restored shape...I'll bet Dr. I. would ask 2x the price. :)

I talked to the pen guy's wife when I was there. Maybe I'll have to go back and try and barter with her. I'm working just down the road from there in Saugatuck this summer.

I'd rather spend my money on pens instead of shoes and handbags.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
