Being for the benefit and edification of the Fountain Pen Network it is herewith and herein pronounced that a holiday writing contest shall begin today and shall last until Twelfth Night (January 6 & the beginning of the carnival season). The contest shall be for any form of writing of a pleasing nature.

All entries shall be emailed or PMed to tytyvyllus and a poll to determine the winner shall be opened for 2 week after ending January 21. Unless there is a tie then another poll will be opened for an additional week.

The winner of this contest shall receive a Monteverde Charisma Fountain Pen along with a certificate of merit. The pen has been donated by an exceptionally generous and mysterious benefactor here at FPN. It was left on our virtual doorstep in a wicker basket with a note requesting that a good home be found for the pen. They also requested they be known by a letter of the alphabet which was also requested not be used.

If anyone else wishes to make a donation for future contests please PM me.

Thank you,

Kurt H,

Moderator The Write Stuff.

What kind of stuff may be write about?  And is it to be handwritten?

We would prefer a holiday theme as we also have a halloween contest. It does not need to be handwritten as it will be posted here and voted on in a poll.

Hi Betty,

It may be in any form you like, as long as it is transferable to the digital medium here. It is supposed to be related to Christmas or the Holiday Season. Just look at the pinned message theads in the "The Write Stuff" forum. Here is the link:

Holiday Writing Contest Entries

For the best entry (as determined by our members) there is a nice prize: a Monteverde Charisma fountain pen in blue celluloid.

HTH, warm regards, Wim

May entries have appeared elsewhere in the past?

No the story must not have appeared anywhere else ( either print, verbal or electronic means) to be considered for the contest.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
