What do you think

OK, stopped off at another indoor flea market this morning on the way home from breakfast with some friends....

Found a Parker 21 Set in cherry condition... not a mark on the FP or Pencil.. not even rub marks on the section.... and in the original box..

The pencil still has the original eraser and a supply of lead in the barrel...

The FP may have been inked once, but it was spotless clean when I flushed it to see...

I think the nib if fine, but I have no waying of knowing from looking at it...

I will ink it later on and post an example...

Here are some pics.. for some reason I could not get a good pic of the set, but the ones of the FP came out better...

OH... It cost me $25..... my inner sense (or maybe that should be nonsense) said it sounded like a good deal.... What do you all think...

OH BTW, is there some kind of 12 step program for this new addiction..

Nice pen set. I never seem to do well at antique stores or flea markets. Maybe it's where I am but either the pens are trash or they are being sold at the super mint box & papers price.

Hey Tom,

I think you did very well... a nice clean set. Those 21's are excellent pens IMO.

Tom - you are doing quite well with finding pens in the wild. I am not sure I would call that an absolute Sumgai price, but it's a good one. Congrats.

That is pretty typical of the Antique market for pens. Lots of overpriced stuff or picked over junk. I have had some luck on some good deals - the $20 Parker 61, a $33 working 1949 Touchdown, a $17 Parker 51 Vac blue Diamond. Also some good 2nd tier pens - like a $5.00 Good Service ring-top. But so much gets overpriced - Sometimes I wonder who buys them - if anyone. Some pens I have been watching at the same place for two years now. It takes some luck to find the deals.

So if you have a lot of ink,

You should get a Yink, I think.

very nice. Kurt's right about our general area - just isn't much down here on the Gulf coast. my daughter found a snorkel for $5 in Dallas once. But then... I don't hit the antique stores anyway.

I'm not big on Parkers but that's a lovely set and from what I see, the color is very nice. Looks like DC blue is the perfect ink for it.

You can say that again...especially if you are competing with pen buyers who have an "in" with the dealers :( And as for pens that just sit there, unsold, with ridiculously high price stickers on them---yes, I too wonder who will buy them....or why the seller doesn't lower their prices and just get rid of them <_<

Nice Parker '21' set, Tom (and nice pics, too)! That's a really nice blue colour; it goes very nicely with the cap.

Don Fluckinger has a really interesting article on "5 steps to Sumagai-dom". He actually has several articles in his Extra-Fine Point series on Richards website that deal with finding pens in the wild that are interesting reads.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
